Warning! Spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy #16
The character Nova just reminded Marvel readers that he's fast - and possibly faster - than DC's Flash. Superspeed is not an uncommon superpower for a character to have—and the way that power is showcased can vary from hero to hero. However, did Nova's recent display of speed indicate that he could outpace even Barry Allen?
In Guardians of the Galaxy #16, written by Al Ewing with art by Juan Frigeri and Fedrico Blee and letters by Vc Corey Petit, the Guardians find themselves facing off against a pretty massive foe. A Skrull fire cult has encased Ego the Living Planet in an egg and that egg is hatching...into a planet-sized Dormammu. When the shell of the egg finally cracks, Nova is summoned from Arakko (formerly Mars, which the X-Men are now colonizing) all the way to where Ego is. The Guardians can't face off against a planet-sized Dormammu and its minions without some extra help.
The most exciting part of this is that Ego and Arakko are pretty far apart. Star-Lord offers to help Nova get there a little faster, but Nova has an exciting trick up his sleeve: opening wormholes. Readers have seen something similar to this before: Nova's "Nova Force" gives him the ability to travel at speeds faster than light. However, Nova tells Star-Lord that he can be all the way to Ego "in minutes." Nova opens up a wormhole and, true to his word, arrives at the Guardians' location moments later to help them.
Going fast enough to open up a wormhole in space is definitely an exciting prospect for Nova. However, this does not count as teleportation: Nova did arrive with time to spare, but he did not arrive there instantly. This kind of speed is something that readers may more closely associate with Flash's Speed Force, the energy field in the DC Universe which grants speedsters their powers. The "traveling through the universe" variety of speed is very close to something that the Speed Force would allow, which makes Nova's ability to do so pretty interesting—especially since the new Flash is way, way faster than Superman.
Even though Speed Force is not working the way it should, it seems like it would be a tight race between Speed Force and Nova force for speed. However, Nova's ability to move faster than the speed of light and open up wormholes to travel through space does not seem to come without drawbacks. Judging from his landing among the Guardians and his takeoff from Arakko, using this particular facet of the Nova Force takes an incredible amount of energy and may require a run-up. Having all of these caveats makes sense for Nova: at the end of the day, he's not a speedster. He has a completely different set of skills of which one happens to be super-speed. Furthermore, the drawbacks of needing a run-up and expelling a lot of energy to open wormholes and move quickly via the Nova Force means that, while Nova could likely move at a speed close to or exceeding Flash between planets, he is not a super-speedster in any sense.
