Potential rainfall could lead to flooding in Chaves County and other parts of New Mexico Friday and into early Saturday, according to a flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.

The flash flood watch will remain in place until Saturday at 3 a.m. for southwest Chaves County, the Chaves County Plains and eastern Lincoln County — as well as Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Quay, Roosevelt, Harding and Union counties and eastern San Miguel County.

“Locally heavy rainfall will lead to flash flooding of burn scars and other vulnerable areas such as urban and poor drainage locations,” the flash flood watch states. Motorists who encounter flooded streets are encouraged to turn around and not try to drive through them.

Dwight Koen, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said half an inch to an inch of rain is possible for Chaves County during the day Friday with the possibility of another three quarters of an inch to an inch Friday night. Another quarter to half an inch is possible for Saturday.

So far this year, Chaves County has received 13.72 inches of rain, more than the 6.65 inches that usually has fallen by mid-August.
