Flash flood watch brings mudslide concerns for Inland mountain burn areas - San Bernardino County Sun

Emergency agencies on Monday urged residents to avoid burn scar areas through Wednesday, Aug 11, due to the potential for mudslides as a flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service.

The flash flood watch will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 10, to Wednesday evening for parts of the High Desert, the San Gorgonio Pass and mountain areas of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the NWS said. The San Bernardino County Fire Department asked residents to find alternate routes through the burn scar areas in San Bernardino and Riverside counties from the Apple and El Dorado fires from 2020.

“If you live in potential debris flow or flash flood areas, be sure that you are signed up for your county’s emergency alert system in case evacuations are issued, and have your supplies packed ready to go,” the Fire Department said in a Monday evening alert.

On July 30, mudslides temporarily closed parts of Highway 38 in the scar of the El Dorado fire. The mudslide was described as a “five-foot wall of mud, boulder, logs and water,” according to the NWS.

The flash flood watch was issued amid predictions of thunderstorms from a monsoon event with “significant moisture,” the Fire Department said.
