Flash flood warning shuts down I-70 through Glenwood Canyon - The Denver Post

A flash flood warning for Eagle and Garfield counties, including the Grizzly Creek burn scar area, has shut down Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon.

The flash flood warning was posted at 4:20 p.m. by the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. The warning is posted though 7:15 p.m.

The canyon closed in both directions from Glenwood Springs to Dotsero, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced at 4:36 p.m.

“This safety closure was implemented in response to the National Weather Service forecasted flash flood WARNING over the Grizzly Creek Burn Scar,” CDOT said.

Motorists can either seek the northern alternate route via Steamboat Springs or wait for the flash flood warning to expire. Drivers can wait on the highway.

At 4:20 p.m., doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain over the Grizzly Creek fire burn area, the weather service said. The expected rainfall rate is 0.7 to 1 inch in one hour.

“Excessive rainfall over the burn scar will result in debris flow
moving through the Glenwood Canyon area,” the weather service said. “The debris flow can consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials.”

Other areas that could experience flash floods are Glenwood Springs and Shoshone.

The weather service described the flash floods as a “life-threatening situation.” People caught in flash floods are instructed to “climb to safety.”

“Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the weather service said. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
