A flash flood warning has been issued for southwestern portions of Washington County in Utah.
The National Weather Service Salt Lake office said at approximately 6:30 p.m., Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain — between .75 and 1 inch of rain has fallen across the warned area.
The Utah city of Hildale, that stretches across the border to Arizona's Colorado City, has reported city washes have started to fill with water. The two cities together are called Short Creek, a community that was once nearly entirely FLDS but has grown increasing secular after leader Warren Jeffs splintered the religious community.
NWS said to expect life-threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. It also reminded people not to drive through flooded roads. A storm in 2015 killed 13 when two vehicles were washed away in a flash flood.
"Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall," NWS said.
The flash flood warning is in effect until 9:30 p.m.
