DC's New Flash is Unlike Every Other Speedster For One Reason - Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for DC Pride #1!

All the different versions of Flash are infamous for running late, but DC's new Flash, Jess Chambers, just broke that mold. Although they possess super speed, nearly every iteration of the Flash is not very good at keeping track of the time, running late for things big and small, mainly because of their preoccupation with being a hero. This is a strange ongoing aspect to every character that takes up the mantle, considering that they have the ability to run pretty much anywhere in a matter of seconds.

Jess Chambers is DC Comics' newest Flash, they were introduced in DC's Very Merry Multiverse in 2020. After their debut, they went on to star as a core member of the Justice League in Future State, along with becoming the fifth speedster to take up the mantle of the Flash. On top of Jess' quick rise to fame, they are also the first non-binary speedster to debut in the comics. It was announced recently that Jess would be returning as they join DC's main timeline in the present. That hasn't happened yet but is sure to happen very soon.

In the Flash's segment of DC Pride #1 titled "Clothes Makeup Gift" by Danny Lore, Klaus Janson, and Dave McCaig, Jess returns as they prepare for a date with Andy Curry aka Aquawoman. Sitting in a theater as their show finishes, the screen shows the Flash running with the tagline "don't be late!" This continues the ongoing joke that every Flash is always late, so viewers shouldn't be like them. This leads Jess and Andy to have a conversation about time management, and how Jess thinks they have time to do it all.

However, as their conversation continues, it shifts to become more about Jess. At this point, Jess states "they've never met a speedster like me" which is vitally important as it goes onto reveal that they are always on time, no matter what. It will be interesting to see when Jess eventually meets the other Flashes if they will bring it up. The whole idea behind their talk leads to the events that happen later, with Jess taking on a new Mirror Master but also trying to show up to their date on time. This is one quality that makes Jess differ from DC's other speedsters, and it's a nice self-knowing jab at Flashes like Barry Allen and Wally West.

Perhaps with DC's new Flash coming into the fold, the Flash Family could learn a thing or two about managing their time better. Nevertheless, it's a small detail, but it's a nice reference to an ongoing joke. Just like the other stories of DC Pride #1, which is out now, Jess Chambers' segment is a delightful mini tale that celebrates their unique qualities. And among the many Flashes in DC Comics' history, they are already making their own imprint.
