The Flash season 7 can reinforce Iris as Barry’s lightning rod. The superhero series first introduced the concept — which pertains to the metaphorical and metaphysical link that connects Iris to The Flash’s powers and is grounded in their love for each other — in its very first episode. However, it didn’t get an official name until the season 4 episode “Enter Flashtime.” With Iris (Candice Patton) still trapped inside the Mirrorverse and Barry (Grant Gustin) close to losing his speed, The Flash season 7 provides the perfect scenario for bringing the concept full circle and confirming that which has long been exemplified.
The Flash season 6 was cut short due to the pandemic, leaving the series a few episodes shy of wrapping up the Mirrorverse arc, which saw Iris kidnapped by the villain Eva McCulloch and replaced with a mirror copy. At the end of the ersatz season 6 finale, Iris transformed into a mirror-like state and disappeared completely. The season 7 trailer confirms that she’s still trapped inside (though it’s unclear where in the Mirrorverse she is). However, the very beginning of the trailer includes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that sees Iris’ hand hovering over Barry’s as an electric spark passes between them.
Interestingly, it’s not a season 7 scene at all, but a moment from the season 1 episode, “The Trap.” It’s possible its addition means that Barry and Iris’ lightning rod connection will be utilized to find Iris in the Mirrorverse and to restore Barry’s speed. Why else would a scene from seasons ago be edited into the new trailer? More importantly, The Flash could finally confirm that Iris is, in fact, connected to Barry’s powers once and for all. While the words “lightning rod” have been used before, the show itself hasn’t formally acknowledged the very concept it has employed from the very beginning. And yet, every time Barry seems to lose his powers or unlocks something new about it, Iris is often the one at his side when it happens.
The idea is that their love is so incredibly powerful and strong that their connection is transcendent. In the pilot, it’s only when Barry and Iris touch for the first time since he wakes up from his coma that his powers are activated; when Barry has amnesia in season 3, his powers are reactivated when he kisses Iris; the couple touch for the first time in the season 4 premiere and his powers are once again restored after exiting the speed force; in season 5, Barry is able to enter flashtime for the first time — wherein he can move so fast that everything else slows down— by way of his and Iris’ bond. The list goes on and on, but the message is clear.
While Iris will escape the Mirrorverse and Barry will surely get back his speed, the lightning rod concept could (and should) prove incredibly crucial to how it goes down in season 7. The inclusion of the spark scene heavily suggests The Flash will finally reinforce Iris as Barry’s lightning rod. Perhaps Barry will use the last of his speed to get to Iris and their connection is what will give him back his speed so they can both escape. After all, their romantic relationship is a cornerstone of the show and it’s about time that The Flash officially acknowledges this intense connection as the driving force behind Barry’s powers. The grand finale of the Mirrorverse arc will be all the better for it.
