But don't stress out when you see that steep water bill, Houston city officials say.

EARTHY FISH NIGHTMARES:  Here's why Houston's water smells bad right now

You don't have to pay that massive bill after the winter storm, Houston Public Works' Director of Communications Alana Reed told Chron.

"Don't worry about your water bills after the winter storm," Reed said. "Pay what you paid on your last bill until auto adjustments can be applied."

Due to the winter storm, Houstonians won't be forced to pay an exorbitant bill because of broken pipes and leaks from the Texas power grid failure, Reed said.

On March 10, a vote will go before Houston City Council to make the necessary adjustments to water bills. If it is approved by the council, there will be automatic adjustments to water bills for Houston residents. This remedy is currently for single-family residential customers.

The amount you currently owe will either be the amount of  your previous bill or an average of the past 12 months, whichever is lower, Reed explained.

There is currently a moratorium on water service cutoff due to the winter storm, Reed confirmed.

If you have any questions, contact a Houston Public Works representative at (713) 371-1400.
