The Flash movie has been been in production for a while and has changed its creative direction quite a bit since it was first announced back in 2014. The movie was originally supposed to come out years ago is now slated to start filming in March of 2021 for an eventual 2022 release.
While there are some things that audiences don't know but hope to see, there is a great deal of information that is known, most of which was revealed at DC Fandome, about the movie regarding the plot and characters.
10 Know: Two Batmen
Earlier this year it was revealed that Michael Keaton would be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne which caught many by surprise since no one expected him to return to the role.
Not too long after, it was revealed that Ben Affleck would also be putting the cowl back on for the first time since Justice League. It seems like the film could also be used to provide closure on Affleck's version of the character since he retired from the role.
9 Theory: Grant Gustin Cameo
A moment that caught every DC fan by surprise was when Ezra Miller reprised his role as the fastest man alive on The Flash during the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover. The short scene showed him arriving in STAR Labs and talking with Grant Gustin's version of the character while they admired each other's suits.
The shocking cameo was one of the most talked-about moments of the event especially since DC is known for keeping their film and TV properties separate. During their convo Grant's Barry even refers to him as "the Flash", confirming that was where the movie version got his name from. Some have speculated that if the solo film is Barry traveling through the multiverse, audiences could see this interaction or another one between him and Grant.
8 Know: Brand New Suit
One thing fans have to look forward to is a new upgraded suit for Barry Allen that will be provided to him by Bruce Wayne but it's unclear which version it will be from, Keaton's or Affleck's.
The original suit he wore in Justice League was originally made from silica-based quartz and fabric which is what NASA uses to protect space shuttles upon reentry which makes sense on account of the intense speed Barry moves at. While it served a functional purpose, the design itself left much to be desired and the teased look at the costume hints at a more sleek look as opposed to the wired together appearance of the original.
7 Theory: A Female Reverse-Flash
One of the most popular villains in DC comics and comics, in general, is The Flash's archenemy, Eobard Thawne aka the Reverse-Flash. Thawne is a speedster from the 25th century who is responsible for the murder of Barry's mom which his father is ultimately blamed for.
A major rumor that has been spreading is that the character would not only appear in the upcoming solo film but will be gender-swapped with Jessica Chastain potentially being cast in the role. While making the character a woman is a large departure from the comics, it could be in an effort to differentiate the DCEU version character from the television show which is portrayed by Tom Cavanagh and Matt Letscher.
6 Know: Based On Flashpoint
The most recent version of the script has been confirmed to be loosely inspired by the major comic book story, Flashpoint. The iconic storyline saw Barry go back in time and save his mother from being murdered and then dealing with the ramifications and changes to the world as a result of his actions.
While some elements may end up being left out like Thomas Wayne's involvement and the Amazonian-Atlantean war, it will still have a similar message.
5 Theory: Cyborg's Involvement
Ray Fisher's Cyborg was first introduced in Justice League back in 2017 and managed to do a decent job of establishing the character despite lots of his key scenes being removed from the movie. Barry and Victor seemed to have a special bond in the movie so many were hoping he would show up in the solo film.
However, Ray Fisher has been having issues with WB due to the ongoing investigation into the alleged misconduct that occurred on the set of Justice League that could affect his chances of showing up. The character was originally intended to have his own solo movie that would have released in 2020 but this might be the closest fans will get.
4 Know: The Newest Director
The project has also gone through many directors since it was first announced. It was originally supposed to be led by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book author, Seth Grahame-Smith, then by Dope director, Rick Famuyiwa, and after by Game Night directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
The project's most recent and likely last director is Andy Muschietti who is best known for helming It and the sequel It Chapter Two. Muschietti is one of several DCEU directors to come from a horror background along with Aquaman's James Wan and Shazam's David F. Sandberg being the two other examples.
3 Theory: A New Iris West
One of the most important characters to the Flash mythos is his main love-interest, Iris West. In the DCEU, Iris was originally portrayed by Kiersey Clemons and was supposed to appear in 2017's Justice League before the scene introducing her was cut.
A few months ago, it was being reported that the studio was looking for a new actress to portray the character in the upcoming solo movie despite Clemons being signed onto the project. The rumor has not been confirmed or denied by either Warner Brothers or any of the crew of the film but considering the creative changes going on with the film, it wouldn't be much of a surprise.
2 Know: The Multiverse
Another thing that was revealed is that it will the film will set up the DCEU's version of the multiverse. The concept of the multiverse is one that has existed for quite a while, especially in the comics. The basis of the concept is that there is an infinite number of universes, each one slightly different from the next.
It is something that the MCU has started to explore in films like Doctor Strange and Avengers: Endgame and will continue to explore in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. It seems like this is how the DCEU will approach films by exploring the different potential universes rather than trying to tell one linear story going forward which might be for the best.
1 Theory: The Rogues
The Flash's Rogues gallery is one of the best in comics and features a ton of interesting and unique villains, many of which have already been explored on The Flash show. Fans saw one of those characters, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, in Suicide Squad.
There are plenty of characters to choose from including Heatwave, Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Weather Wizard, Gorilla Grodd, and many others that audiences would love to see on the big screen.
