Death Metal the Flash

While rallying the various remaining heroes of the DC Universe to the last army, this new issue finally reveals what's become of Barry Allen in the Metalverse. The Flash has been running at top speeds around the world. He's stayed away from many of his allies out of fear of being detected by the Batman Who Laughs. It's revealed that the Speed-Force has largely been depleted and that this will soon drain Flash of his powers. But what little has remained has been almost all used up by Barry. Flash has been actively trying to escape this time period and go into the past, giving him the chance to change it and potentially rewrite the entire reality around them. While this could have unknown effects on their lives, it could also give the Justice League a chance of reversing the rule of Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs.

This is very similar to what Barry did during Flashpoint, when he ventured into the past and changed the fate of one life by saving his mother from Eobard Thawne's attack. But this had a chain reaction that led to other changes throughout reality, altering the fates of many heroes and putting the entire world at risk. The reality Barry accidentally created as a result of his actions fell into world war and was destroyed. Barry was one of the only ones who were aware of the changed reality and how his actions could turn entire worlds on their head. It's become a cautionary tale for the Flash and the other speedsters of the DC Universe, who now know to never try to use their powers in this manner.

The severity of the threat to the multiverse that is the Metalverse pushed Flash to make this decision. Similar to the other heroes of the DC Universe, recent circumstances have forced them to take brutal actions that they'd normally never even consider. Batman has been forced to conscript armies of the dead using a Black Lantern Ring, while Wonder Woman shows no remorse or concern with having killed the Batman Who Laughs outside of the potential for his next plan to be activated. The Flash knows the dangers of causing a Flashpoint-type event, and right now those risks aren't outweighed by the presence of Perpetua.

Despite the risk of this tactic, it didn't work. Either through the lack of available Speed Force energy or some machinations of Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs, Flash wasn't able to ever break free of this time period. Considering that Wally West found the Batman Who Laughs destroying history along with the Multiverse, that's not too surprising. He couldn't move either direction in time and essentially wasted much of his remaining power -- and the power that still fuels the other Speedsters -- on a futile attempt to save the world. It proves that Barry is willing to break the most important rules of being a Speedster in times of true terror, but that willpower doesn't always mean he's got the strength to follow through on his intentions.
