It’s been a long haul with Iris West-Allen when it comes to her time sickness. The illness, which has yet to be given a satisfactory reason for existing in the story, was first introduced in The Flash season 7. We’re halfway through the show’s eighth season run, and the storyline is still moving at a snail’s pace.
Yes, Iris had a Thanos-like moment where she erased someone from the timeline (though in her case it was an accident). Her friendship with Sue Dearbon has been a welcome addition that won fans over the moment Sue started helping Iris work through her fear concerning her time sickness.
However, this time sickness storyline is feeling very much like the season 3 plot that involved Team Flash working around the clock to keep Savitar from killing Iris. The glaring difference this time around being that this season 8 storyline lacks the necessary desperation and near single-minded focus of its season 3 counterpart.
The way this time sickness storyline is playing out has fans worried about Candice Patton’s future on The Flash. This has genuinely been a concern the entirety of the series run though it hasn’t always been focused on her character’s demise. A lot of the time, the concern has been that she’d be underwritten, underutilized, or written completely out of the story.
TVLine reports that a major character is set to die in an upcoming episode of The Flash. Speculation has heavily centered on Danielle Panabaker’s turns as Caitlin Snow and Frost respectively. The Deathstorm storyline, which has finally made significant traction in the show, is the perfect set-up for one of these characters to either go out heroically or tragically.
However, the news that a major character will die has had fans wondering whether they should actually be concerned about Iris West’s fate more and therefore Patton’s standing on the show. Should we be worried? Here’s what we know.
Is Iris West leaving The Flash?
Fan speculation about either Caitlin or Frost dying is likely correct. Patton is scheduled to miss four episodes this season, but we doubt it’s due to an interlude between Iris’ demise and the Flash family saying their final goodbyes to her in the tail end of the season.
But, we have to note that Patton hasn’t signed a contract for the show’s ninth season. Grant Gustin is slated for fifteen episodes. Jesse L. Martin has been bumped down to a recurring character as Joe West with an option to appear in up to five episodes next season. This is due to Martin playing the lead in the NBC pilot The Irrational.
There’s been no word on Patton’s negotiations for a ninth season contract other than they are ongoing. However, the star recently posted to her Instagram stories a series of videos that caused a commotion among The Flash fans.
In one, Patton–who looks like she’d been crying–is wiping her face. A caption that reads “That’s a wrap on Iris West-Allen” is on the screen. In the next story, her trailer door, which has Iris’ name on it, is shut. That’s followed by video of Patton’s dog, Zoe, walking through the trailer lot.
Yes, Patton may have meant that’s a wrap for her character in season 8, but it’s understandable that the Instagram stories have fans questioning her place in season 9. Unfortunately, we can’t answer if she’ll be stepping into Iris’ shoes once more or for how many episodes next season.
