Following the official renewal of The Flash season 9, one of the show's stars confirms their return for the next season. The future of the Arrowverse, which is turning ten-years-old as of this October, was cast in doubt earlier this year. The CW normally renews most of their series for another season around late-January/early-February, but 2022 was a different story. In a surprise reveal, the public learned that WarnerMedia and Paramount, who are the owners of The CW, were putting the network up for sale. Because of this move, the renewal process became significantly delayed, including for The Flash.
However, after a lot of waiting, The CW finally made the call this month by officially announcing their first set of renewals, with The Flash being one of two Arrowverse shows renewed for 2022/23. While Arrow has held the title as the Arrowverse's longest-running series, The Flash season 9 will officially claim that title as of this year. For the time being, it hasn't been clarified by The CW if The Flash season 9 will be the last one; currently, Grant Gustin's new contract has him attached for one year, which includes a salary raise for The Flash star.
Since Gustin is attached for The Flash season 9, what other actors are expected to be back next year? While it's unclear about the majority of them, there is at least one that is officially set to return. Brandon McKnight, who portrays Chester P. Runk, confirms his role in The Flash season 9 in a chat with Decider. McKnight mentions what a relief it was to finally get the official news, after months of whispers about The Flash's future, sharing the following:
I mean there were whispers and things like that, you kind of hear things through the grapevine. But you never really know until you know. So once I heard I was like, “Oh great. Cool. I get to pay my bills for another year.”
McKnight, who joined the Arrowverse back in The Flash season 6, began as a recurring guest star before being upgraded to a full-time cast member for season 7. As the show was winding down on Cisco Ramon's journey, Chester took over the role of Team Flash's tech master as Carlos Valdes exited the series last season. Given that The Flash is about to enter season 9, it's definitely worth wondering which actors are actually coming back next season. When a show gets as far as The Flash do, it's common for the main cast to get smaller.
The bigger mystery is for some of The Flash's long-time cast members, like Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and Jesse L. Martin. Back in June 2021, the three original stars signed new deals ahead of The Flash season 8 to return as Iris West-Allen, Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, and Joe West, respectively. It's unclear, however, if their new contracts included The Flash season 9, should the series have been renewed. As The Flash season 8 continues, time will tell which other characters will be back for season 9, which is set to premiere in the 2022-2023 TV season.
