With actor Hartley Sawyer fired from The Flash, season 7 should look to DC Comics for a character to replace his Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man. With Sawyer sacked after old offensive tweets resurfaced, the fate of the stretching superhero is up in the air. The CW and Warner Bros. TV has yet to clarify if they’re intending to recast the part or if Ralph is being written out of The Flash altogether. Despite introducing his iconic love interest Sue Dearbon, Ralph barely played a part in season 6, which might have been an early sign that the Arrowverse was already outgrowing him.
That alone could suggest that The Flash season 7 will simply write the character out, giving them one headache less with having to recast Sawyer's Ralph with another actor. It will likely be revealed later in the year if the producers will recast Ralph or send the character away off-screen. With January 2021 being set as when The Flash season 7 premieres, production will have to begin sometime in late summer, which will likely be when viewers find out what Ralph’s fate will be in the series. But as the Arrowverse shows are known for introducing new heroes every season, Elongated Man’s potential exit could open the door for a new DC character to take his place.
The Flash: Casting Hartley Sawyer's Replacement As Ralph Dibny
Luckily for The Flash, there are plenty of famous DC heroes that the Arrowverse has yet to explore through any of their shows. Given that The Flash is one of the more comic book-y shows in the franchise, their options is vastly bigger as there are plenty of heroes that would, tone-wise, fit in. But while there are new heroes that could take over for Ralph, there are also a few options of previously established Arrowverse characters who could benefit from taking Ralph’s spot as a series regular.
Bumblebee
One of the core elements of The Flash since the very beginning is science, hence the big inclusion of scientists on Team Flash. While the team has had several of them, one that should have appeared a long time ago is Karen Beecher a.k.a. Bumblebee. Known as a member of the Teen Titans, Bumblebee is one of DC’s primary African-American superheroes who has had her adventures outside the panels in animation. From Teen Titans to Young Justice, Karen has been on the small-screen for years but has yet to make her live-action debut.
With The Atom having left Legends of Tomorrow, the Arrowverse has lost its shrinking-based superhero. Not only could Karen as Bumblebee fill that void on The Flash, but introducing another black heroine into the Arrowverse would expand the diversity even further. While the shows have the presence of several incredible African-American women, Black Lightning’s Thunder and Lightning are currently the only ones who are full-fledged superheroes. Adding Bumblebee would help expand that line-up while also being a perfect fit with the team as another optimistic and gifted individual.
Blue Beetle (Ted Kord & Jaimie Reyes)
When it comes to Blue Beetle, the Arrowverse has teased its viewers for years about the possibility of the iconic hero making it into the franchise. In the case of Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, Brandon Routh was supposed to play him when he booked his recurring gig in Arrow season 3. However, DC and Warner Bros. had a change of heart last minute as they wouldn’t allow Arrow to use Ted, which is why Routh ended up playing The Atom. But with the multiple mentions of Ted throughout the years as well as Kord Industries being incorporated endlessly, there is no better time to finally introduce him in the flesh if Ralph is indeed being removed from The Flash. Ideally, Ted would also get to suit-up as Blue Beetle, giving the team a different kind of hero that would also be a relief for the budget as he doesn’t have any super-powers. After all the groundwork that the Arrowverse has set for Ted for years, it would be a shame if he never gets to properly show-up. However, if Ted is still not allowed to appear on The CW, there is another Blue Beetle that The Flash could introduce and perhaps someone that could shake up the status quo: Jaime Reyes.
Perhaps the more famous Blue Beetle with modern readers and viewers, Jaime is the third person to carry the mantle, but on a whole different level. Through the power of the Scarab, Jaime’s Blue Beetle has, in many ways, elevated the hero’s name in ways that Dan Garrett and Ted Kord simply never did. Something that The Flash hasn’t played a lot with since Jesse Quick is having a teenager on the team. With Kid Flash and XS pretty much being young adults, the show has never had a straight-up teenage superhero as part of Team Flash. Introducing Jaime’s Blue Beetle could lead to some compelling dynamics, especially if he is only just beginning his journey as a superhero. With Cisco no longer being Vibe, having a fellow Hispanic mentor guide Jaime would give Cisco a powerful storyline, as well as perhaps a surrogate brother since his big brother Dante, has been dead for years.
Through the success of Stargirl, it’s a fact that viewers are here for younger heroes to join the Arrowverse and Jaime is someone who deserves a bigger spotlight and a proper live-action portrayal. Blue Beetle, whether it’s Ted or Jaime, is a perfect match for The Flash in terms of tone. Introducing Ted would be a big payoff for longtime Arrowverse viewers while also being a superhero that would financially cost less to have on-screen, in comparison to Elongated Man. But Jaime would be a breath of fresh air especially if the Arrowverse brings him in as a teenager whose origin story could begin on The Flash.
Booster Gold
While Legends of Tomorrow fills the time-travel quota in the Arrowverse, The Flash has gotten to play with that element in past seasons. Even though Nora’s storyline had a tragic ending through the result of messing with time-travel, The Flash deserves to get to have properly fun and success with exploring characters from the future. Someone who is due for an Arrowverse introduction is Michael Jon Carter a.k.a. Booster Gold, the futuristic superhero with a passion for glory who, over time, learns what it means to be a true hero.
Booster has, since his live-action debut on Smallville, been someone that is perfect for The CW’s DC TV universe, but still not been allowed to pop-up. Even though his son Rip Hunter was in the first three seasons of Legends of Tomorrow, Booster has still not made it into any of the ongoing shows. With Crisis on Infinite Earths having rebooted the Arrowverse, the past, present, and future was changed because of it. Little is currently known about Earth-Prime in the future other than what was seen in the backdoor pilot for Green Arrow and the Canaries.
Introducing Booster in the present would allow The Flash a chance to explore what Earth-Prime looks like in his timeline. Additionally, having a comedic character like him on the team would easily set up some terrific dynamics. But The Flash is also the show where cocky characters like Booster gets to properly develop and be fleshed out that results with them being stronger heroes in the end. Having Michael be guided by someone like Barry Allen would be a partnership that could be properly explored throughout a whole season.
Static
Another DC character who has a massive following, but has yet to arrive in live-action is Virgil Hawkins a.k.a. Static. Despite a massively successful and iconic animated series as well as a big fandom behind him, it’s a shock that Virgil still hasn’t appeared in live-action, whether in his own project or as a supporting character. While there was a live-action Static Shock web-series in the works years ago, that project seems to have been scrapped. As the Arrowverse needs to include more teenage superheroes, especially following Stargirl, Virgil is one of those characters that can perfectly represent that demographic.
Similarly to Jaime, having Virgil begin his origin story by joining Team Flash would allow several of the members to get to take on new roles in his life. Visually, it would be entertaining to see Barry be joined by another electric-based superhero. Additionally, since Black Lightning is now in the same universe as the other Arrowverse shows, this could start the build-up to Jefferson Piece and Virgil eventually crossing paths, something that even the producers wants to happen. With Virgil also being one of the most beloved heroes of color in DC, having him join the Arrowverse would be a solid live-action debut for the young hero.
Zatanna
Magic has been one of the realms that the Arrowverse has been limited with over the years. With John Constantine currently being the character to represent that side of the DC Universe on Legends of Tomorrow, the other shows still haven’t played around with magic-based stories. However, Constantine’s role as a magic-based hero is only one side of that corner in the DC world. Another magical superhero that has a big following is Zatanna Zatara who, just like Booster Gold, hasn’t been in live-action since Smallville.
Since the Arrowverse has become known for its inspiring line-up of heroines, adding Zatanna would be an opportunity to explore a different kind of magic. With The Flash having dealt with different threats over the years, magic is one layer that they haven’t explored too much besides Abra Kadabra back in season 3. It would also mark the second time that the show has added a new female superhero as a series regular, following XS in season 5. Regardless if they add a magic-based villain next season, seeing Zatanna on Team Flash would add a new layer while also setting up the possibility of her and Constantine at some point teaming-up.
Ryan Choi
While the Arrowverse has a lot of new characters that they could use to replace Ralph with, there is one that they introduced this past season that hasn’t been seen since the crossover. Being one of the Paragons to help save the Multiverse, Ryan Choi was introduced through Crisis on Infinite Earths. But despite the big role he played, the character has, surprisingly, not been seen again since the 5-part crossover. Given that he is one of the people to carry the mantle of The Atom, it was almost assumed that Legends of Tomorrow would bring him in and follow the comics where Ryan suits-up as the shrink-sizing superhero.
But with the fifth season of the time-traveling dramedy over, Ryan never did show-up following Ray’s departure. Despite the big diversity in the franchise, the Arrowverse lacks Asian representation, especially with the superheroes. While there are a handful of Asian-American characters from Black Lightning’s Grace Choi, Batwoman’s Mary Hamilton to The Flash’s Kamilla Hwang, there is still room for introducing more. After the great arc that Ryan went through in the crossover, it would be such a waste if the Arrowverse never brings him back in a bigger capacity.
Even if he were to suit-up, one of Ryan’s greatest traits was how grounding he was as a character, something that would fit in with the world of The Flash. Since Ray is no longer a regular in the Arrowverse, The Flash should follow the mythology and let Ryan take up the Atom mantle. Not only would it be a lot of fun to see this incarnation of Ryan as a superhero, but having his energy around on a more regular basis would do wonders for not just The Flash, but the Arrowverse as a whole.
