MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – Central Michigan University President Bob Davies has announced that several administrators, including himself, will see pay cuts amid the coronavirus pandemic. The cuts will also impact some coaching staff.

The decision came after CMU saw significant financial losses caused by the coronavirus. Several administrators now have short-term pay cuts of 2 to 8 percent to relieve some of the university’s financial burden. Additionally, Davies received a pay cut of 10 percent.

Heather Smith, CMU’s executive director of communications, said there is no clear end date to when the salary reductions will cease. She said they will last until at least Aug. 31, but they may be extended depending on how CMU’s financial situation progresses.

As such, she said it “did not make sense” to subtract the percentage decrease from each employees’ annual salary since CMU is not currently planning on cutting salaries for the entire academic year.

“It’s not an annual reduction,” Smith said. “It will be a time frame. The president announced that the reductions will be effective until Aug. 31, and we will reevaluate after that.”

Davies announced in a Monday, May 4, email that he will see a 10 percent pay cut. According to CMU’s 2018-2019 financial plan, Davies’ salary is $415,000. That equates to a pay cut of about $800 a week.

Cabinet members, vice presidents and senior vice provost salaries were reduced by 8 percent, Smith said. Deans, senior associate deans and head athletic coach salaries were reduced by 6 percent. The remaining senior officers and professional and administrative staff salaries that are at or higher than $100,000 were reduced anywhere from 2 to 4 percent. In total, over 90 employees will have their salaries cut, according to Smith.

Among those receiving an 8 percent cut are Athletic Director Michael Alford and Provost Mary Schutten. Alford earns $275,000 annually, and he will remain eligible for NCAA bonuses. He will lose around $423 a week that his salary is cut. Schutten’s salary is unknown, but her predecessor, Michael Gealt, made $287,163 during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine George Kikano made $650,000 last academic year. With an 8 percent pay cut, he will lose $1,000 each week.

Football coach Jim McElwain, men’s basketball coach Keno Davis and women’s basketball coach Heather Oesterle will each receive a 6 percent decrease. CMU’s two deputy athletic directors will also receive a 2 percent pay decrease.

McElwain’s base salary is $400,000, but he received an additional $190,000 in compensation and a $50,000 retention bonus as part of his contract, signed in 2019. Davis’s salary is set at $320,000, and Oesterle makes $250,000. All coaches will remain eligible for NCAA Division I bonuses, such as for media appearances, academics and performance.

Davies’ email stated that college deans will be asked to restrict discretionary spending and travel. Paid administrative leave is still slated to end May 15, the email stated.

CMU had previously announced a tuition freeze for the upcoming academic year,
