The Coyotes wore No. 20 on their helmets Friday night in honor of Mickey Reeves, who passed away last week at age 51. Reeves, widely regarded as one of the greatest high school athletes in the history of New Mexico, was part of two championship-winning Roswell Coyotes football teams in the 1980s under head coach Jim Bradley. As a junior he helped the Coyotes beat Mayfield 29-7 for the 1987 championship, and as a senior in 1988, he was part of the team that beat Clovis 14-3 for the title. He also excelled in many other sports. Reeves later went to Arizona State before subsequently being drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Reeves had built a legacy in coaching in multiple sports after his playing days ended, and was offensive coordinator for the Gateway Warriors football team that last weekend won the 2021 state championship.
