Wally West is Infinite Frontier's new Flash - even with recent teases he will retire, but Barry Allen is still showing up in Brian Michael Bendis' Justice League team... is there a twist coming? A major point in Infinite Frontier #0 was when Barry passed on the mantle of the Flash to Wally. This happens as Barry is offered a role in the Justice Incarnate, the multiversal Justice League, by President Superman. After some consideration, he took the opportunity, meaning that he would be leaving his role as Central City's Flash to become the Flash of the Omniverse.
Meanwhile, Wally will become the Flash of Central City. He will be seen running things in The Flash's upcoming Infinite Frontier era issues, leading the Flash-Family members as they protect the city from dangerous threats. It's exciting to see Wally take on duties as the Flash again, especially due to the dire circumstances he has faced over the past few years. However, it seems that Wally won't be taking on the mantle for very long, thanks to DC's recent teases that he'll retire but also because Barry is seen in Bendis' Justice League roster.
In Justice League #59 by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez, Barry Allen is still a member of the Justice League, contradicting the events of Infinite Frontier #0. This has undoubtedly confused many readers, but could there be more to Barry's inclusion? In Screen Rant's interview with Bendis himself, he confirmed that Barry will be a guest star in every issue they've finished so far. Also, Bendis teased that the Flash of his new Justice League is Barry for a certain reason, which he could not reveal.
In Infinite Frontier #0, Barry Allen joins Justice Incarnate. Yet he appears in Justice League to hand over the mantle to Wally. Who will be your Justice League's official Flash, Wally West or Barry Allen?
Brian Michael Bendis: Barry is in our book as a guest star. And again, I laugh because he's guest-starred in every issue. Eventually, if I was his agent, I would be calling going, "Bump him up to regular! He's in every episode." But yeah, it's Barry... For a reason.
That pause is me going, And anything else I say is a spoiler in someone else's story, so I'm going to shut up.
It would seem that a twist is due in the upcoming issues of The Flash, explaining why Barry is back in the Justice League. However, he's likely to be only temporarily back. Possibly, the events of Bendis' Justice League will set up Barry's arrival as a member of the Justice Incarnate. Thanks to DC releasing the cover art for Infinite Frontier #1, we know that Barry will join President Superman and co by the time of its release. It'd be naive to assume that they've already made continuity errors right as they open the gates to the Infinite Frontier, perhaps, we're just not being let in on a big secret.
Brian Michael Bendis' upcoming Justice League issues will see Barry as the league's resident speedster and scientist. Presumably, as he was reluctant to go into why it's Barry, not Wally, there is a greater reason for Barry's unexpected presence. As Barry will be sticking around, it can be assumed that his enrollment is pending and that there is no current rush for him to join. This is because there aren't any major multiversal threats, but from what we've been told, it won't be long until Darkseid escapes his prison on Earth-Omega. At which, Barry will have been a member of the Justice Incarnate for a while, considering The Flash probably be the one to find out about Darkseid first.
