Evanston, a Chicago suburb, will begin paying reparations to Black families.
In an eight to one vote, city officials agreed to pay $400,000 to residents harmed by discriminatory housing practices between 1919 and 1959.
Eligible families can receive up to $25,000 through the program.
The money can be used for home repairs, down payments and mortgage payments.
Evanston’s reparations program is being funded by donations and revenue from a sales tax on recreational marijuana.
