The Arrowverse Flash Made Snyder Cut Joke Work | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Warning! The following feature contains SPOILERS for Zack Snyder's Justice League and The Flash season 7, episode 3, "Mother."

The DCEU and the television series The Flash offer two drastically different takes on DC Comics and its characters. This difference was emphasized recently when the heroes of the Arrowverse series built a workable plan around something that the cinematic Barry Allen said as a joke in Zack Snyder's Justice League and gave birth to a new Speed Force born of the power of love.

The climax of Zack Snyder's Justice League found the titular team struggling with the question of how to penetrate the defenses Steppenwolf built around the Unity, the three merged Motherboxes that would transform Earth into a copy of the dark world of Apokolips. At one point, after Aquaman asked if they were sure Cyborg was powerful enough to hack into the alien technology, Barry Allen joked that he would be backing Cyborg up with "the power of love." He then clarified, to his unamused teammates, that he would actually be generating a "catastrophic energy surge" to push Cyborg into the Unity.

Ironically, two days before the Snyder Cut was released, a different version of Barry Allen literally used the power of love to save Earth. Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths event (where the Arrowverse Barry Allen briefly met the DCEU Barry Allen) this Barry Allen discovered that he had accidentally destroyed the Speed Force of his Earth and needed to find a new source of power. This led to the construction of an Artificial Speed Force, which restored Barry Allen's speed but had the unfortunate side-effect of making him lose touch with his emotions, leaving him reluctant to try another mechanical solution.

The Flash Iris West Empowers New Speed Force

The Flash episode "Mother" found the Arrowverse Barry Allen coming up with a way to revive the old Speed Force, based on his designation as the Paragon of Love. Barry theorized that he could draw out the residual Speed Force within Iris from her brief time as a speedster and use her to empower a new organic Speed Force by drawing on the love they felt for each other. Miraculously, the plan worked, and Barry Allen was back in action just in time to stop the Mirror Mistress from taking over Earth-Prime.

It's amusing how a statement meant to be a joke in Zack Snyder's Justice League could be made into a literal truth in the Arrowverse. Still, as a wise man once noted, "the power of love is a curious thing... It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes, but it might just save your life." That's an optimistic statement every version of The Flash is likely to agree with, no matter which branch of the DC Comics' multiverse they come from.
