Social interactions are a no-go, but the forbidden interactions of a few members prove to be extremely valuable as they begin to question each other 's identities. DC's Future State is a two-month event that introduces new heroes and storylines in the far future. One of those new characters is Jess Chambers, the fifth speedster to pick up the mantle of the Flash. They are the first non-binary, genderfluid member of the Justice League. This exciting new version of the Scarlet Speedster has proven to be a charming, mischievous, and sometimes rulebreaking addition to the League with their much-beloved interactions with Aquawoman. In the previous issue, it was established that Jess came from another Earth and that they came to reveal a huge conspiracy. Batman takes issue with the way that they arrived and is suspicious of their true intentions. It all bubbles to the surface as he questions Jess specifically.

In Future State: Justice League #2 by Joshua Williamson, Robson Rocha, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Daniel Henriques, and Tom Napolitano, Batman discloses that he doesn't trust Wonder Woman, Superman, or Flash. As their abilities can be easily replicated by the Hyper Clan. However, Superman pushes back against this, saying that Batman out of all of them is the easiest to target to pose as. Batman possesses no powers and is simply a human. Also, out of everyone, he is the most secretive about his identity, making him an even easier target as the League knows almost nothing about him. But Batman's mistrust of the Flash comes from Jess being from another world. It's clear that this feud is ongoing and has been simmering in the back of Batman's mind, perhaps due to the mystery that lingers about them working on a grander scale?

It's embedded into Batman's DNA to mistrust as after all he is a detective and this mystery is yet to be revealed. It's very evident that his trust issues don't end with DC's new Flash, but he targets them due to his ongoing inner conflict with that which he doesn't know. This contradicts his stance that the team shouldn't give away their identities as some clarity would probably ease the Caped Crusader's mind. This comes later in the issue as the team re-evaluates their rules and Batman goes as far as unmasking himself, revealing his true identity as Jace Fox. With Batman's trust issues more prescient than ever, his reveal will aid his relationship with the Flash and the other team members.

The Flash came to the Justice League's Earth to deliver a warning and it still remains a mystery as to the bigger picture. But with the popularity of Jess' Flash surging since their debut in DC's Very Merry Multiverse and their prominence in Future State, it would seem that DC's first genderfluid speedster will return at some point. It's unknown whether Flash's warning will be ever fully uncovered, but with some Future State stories continuing into Infinite Frontier perhaps fans will get an answer to the bigger picture. The Flash and Batman, in their current forms, will hopefully come face to face once more in the near future when all is uncovered.
