The Flash: Where Jesse Quick and Max Mercury Have Been Since Flashpoint - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #760, by Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.

In The Flash #758, Eobard Thawne used his assembled Legion of Zoom to beat the Scarlet Speedster and then phased into him. As a result, the Reverse-Flash took over Flash's body. While Thawne controlled his body, Barry got lost in another dimension, a place he didn't fully understand. It looked like he was in the Speed Force, but Barry knew enough about the source of his abilities that he recognized it also wasn't the Speed Force. To make matters worse, he was attacked by ghoulish versions of Max Mercury and Jesse Quick. Now, in The Flash #760, Barry finally learns where they're all trapped: a place called the Starting Line.

Once upon a time, Max Mercury and Jesse Quick were two fan-favorite members of the Flash Family, having run alongside both Barry Allen and Wally West. However, when Barry altered time in the 2011 event series Flashpoint, he created a new timeline that streamlined DC continuity and altered the past. In this reality, known as The New 52, Jesse and Max were erased, and no one remembered them.

But as The Flash #760 reveals, the duo of speedsters were actually trapped rather than gone entirely. Their ghoulish appearances were also just a result of Barry's guilt, and soon they changed back. As Barry, Jesse and Max reconnect, the lattermost of them reveals they're trapped a place called the "Starting Line," explaining, "It's the Big Bang for the Speed Force. A pure point of creation that connects it to time and space." Jesse then reveals they've been trapped there for almost ten years due to "changes to the timeline."

This adds a whole new dimension to the Speed Force, which is a cosmic reality only speedsters can enter. It connects them all, and it's what gives them their abilities. It seemed to be this unending force, another dimension without beginning or end. But the Starting Line serves as a definitive start for the Speed Force. This space is what tethers the Speed Force to reality, and theoretically what allows it to exist.

Thankfully, while Thawne meant to trap Barry in an inescapable place, Reverse-Flash actually gave his nemesis the means to return -- and to bring back a few friends. Indeed, since Barry's body is still on Earth, he can use that connection to pull him out of the Starting Line along with Jesse and Max along with him.

Thanks to some efficient coaching by his two forgotten friends, Barry is able to get back control of his body. And as he does so, he frees both Max and Jesse from their prison. Now, not only is the Flash back, but so are Jesse Quick and Max Mercury. And with their return, we understand a little more about the Speed Force, and where it comes from.

The Flash #760 is on sale now from DC.
