The Flash: Joe West's Season 7 Story Is Inspired by the Real World's Current Sociopolitical Climate - CBR - Comic Book Resources

In the wake of the brutal murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police officers, the role of police in television and other mediums has been scrutinized. The Flash is no exception, as Central City Police Captain Joe West will feature in a "topical" storyline during Season 7.

"Joe’s storyline this season is inspired by the societal changes happening in today’s world," showrunner Eric Wallace told Entertainment Weekly. "Because with everything we’re all waking up to each day in 2020, I felt there was a great opportunity here -- even within our fantastical, family-oriented show -- to comment indirectly on truths folks could easily recognize. And do so in an entertaining way."

Wallace also confirmed that this storyline would kick off in the middle of Season 7. "It will be very obvious as Joe goes through these changes and ends up in a place that's unexpected for him, but that is honorable and very aware of today's problems from a law perspective," he said. "So it's made the storytelling for his character's story line, I think, the most exciting thing that I've been able to write for him since I've been the showrunner. I just can't wait for folks to see it."

Joe has been an integral part of The Flash since its series premiere, acting as the adoptive father of Barry Allen. At the end of Season 5, he was promoted to Captain by his predecessor David Singh.

Returning to The CW for Season 7 in 2021, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin and Danielle Nicolet.
