The Flash boss teases "wonderful" and unexpected arc for Joe in season 7 - digitalspy.com

The Flash's Joe West is set to "rise up" in the superhero show's seventh season, in a storyline that "is inspired by the societal changes happening in today's world."

As production on the outing's next instalment starts up again following pandemic-related delays, boss Eric Wallace teased what's in store for Barry Allen's police chief father-in-law and how parts of his upcoming arc will reference real-life events. With comic book style elements though, of course...

"With everything we're all waking up to each day in 2020, I felt there was a great opportunity here – even within our fantastical, family-oriented show – to comment indirectly on truths folks could easily recognize. And do so in an entertaining way," he explained to Entertainment Weekly recently.

"As we're working our way through Joe's wonderful storyline this year, Joe gets challenged by the events of the world that are going on nowadays. Of course, in a sci-fi superhero way, because we're on a superhero show. And he really rises up," he said.

"I'm so proud of the character and I'm so excited for Jesse to take Joe in just a little bit of a new direction, because Joe's a good man with a good heart. If he sees injustice, he's not a person who turns a blind eye to it. He's a person who says something and does something."

Elsewhere in the interview, Wallace revealed that they've written about half of the scripts for season 7 already and that Joe's material so far is "the most exciting thing that [he's] been able to write for him" since he was appointed showrunner in season 6.

Over the years, several of the Arrowverse series have addressed existing social issues across their respective runs.

Supergirl's second season was defined by its immigration allegories and later, the same show tackled transphobia, too. Arrow, on the other hand, centred one of its season 5 episodes on gun control.

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK. Season 7 is expected to premiere sometime in 2021.
