Sacramento area residents gathered downtown Saturday to remember the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday at the age of 87.
Mourners started at the Sacramento County Courthouse, some holding candles and adding photos and signs to makeshift memorials, before joining another vigil at the California state Capitol.
The events were just some of many that have sprung up around the country, including the steps of the Supreme Court and the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco.
Lynn Lenzi from North Natomas said she came out Saturday to pay tribute to Ginsburg and her legacy of fighting for the rights of women.
"She paved the way for women in all walks of life, and she worked tirelessly to break down the norms of society at the time, discrimination against women of all races and creeds," Lenzi said. "She was someone who you admired. We're just here to pay our respects and say goodbye."
Maria Dickerson of Sacramento said she wanted to show support for people like Ginsburg who are "trying to help those that are truly challenged."
"Ruth was an incredible woman that stood for so much righteous," Dickerson said. "And we've been having such a hard time, and she was an incredible fighter and I think that it is very important to support where we care as much as we can."
