Ben Affleck has returned to the DCEU and is rumored to be appearing in the upcoming Flash movie starring Ezra Miller. The Flash and Batman have an interesting relationship and have interacted mostly in adventures with the Justice League throughout comics history. But there is one defining moment in the comic books that brings out the emotional ties between the two: the time Barry Allen made Bruce Wayne cry in Flashpoint.
The Flash is currently scheduled to be released in the summer of 2022, after years of development. Not much is known about The Flash’s plot, only that it will have heavy influences from the seminal Flash story Flashpoint. Ben Affleck announced his departure from the Batman role in 2019, which severed his ties with the DCEU. With Ben Affleck’s return to the DCEU, there are now three confirmed Batmans at play: Ben Affleck, Robert Pattison, and Micheal Keaton. While Robert Pattison will play Batman in Matt Reve’s The Batman, both Micheal Keaton and Ben Affleck are rumored to play Batman in The Flash.
Flashpoint is a critical Flash story where Barry Allen goes back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. This change in history has major ripples throughout the DC timeline: a world where the Amazons and Atlantians are at war, Bruce Wayne is murdered instead of his parents and world destruction is imminent. Allen sees that his selfish choices placed the world at great risk, and corrects his mistake. Before Allen rectifies his change in time, Thomas Wayne, who is Batman instead of Bruce Wayne, gives the Flash a letter to deliver to the Bruce Wayne of the original timeline.
When the Flash returns to the original timeline, he runs to the Batcave to give Bruce Wayne the letter from his father. The letter brings the Batman to tears, in a memorable and shocking panel. Wayne declares “You’re one hell of a messenger.” There are few and rare moments between Batman and Flash, but Flashpoint is a brings unity between the two.
With two Batmans being rumored in The Flash, could there be a recreation of this defining scene? Could Micheal Keaton play a Bruce Wayne of a different world, instead of Thomas Wayne? Wayne and Allen have a common factor in their heroism, with both losing parents at a young age. While these tragedies motivate the characters differently, it is a better emotional connector than the infamous “Martha” in Batman V. Superman. With the rumored Flashpoint plot of The Flash, there could be no better scene to pay homage to, especially when there is now a Bat in play.
