The Flash: Christian Bale's Batman Has No Place in the DCEU | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

In the wake of the fan excitement following the announcement of Michael Keaton reprising the role of Batman in the long-gestating Flash film starring Ezra Miller in the title role, it's been reported Warner Bros. has a backup plan in case Michael Keaton ever falls through. The other alternate reality Batman that the Flash could meet is Christian Bale's Batman of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. This may seem like a logical choice, given that Bale was the most recent prominent actor aside from Ben Affleck to don the cowl. But, Bale's Batman would be a tough fit for the DC Extended Universe for numerous reasons, and incorporating him could be a big mistake.

The core reason is quite simple: Bale's Batman exists in a world without superpowers. The guiding principle of Nolan's films was to ensure Batman functioned as realistically as possible in our world. Batman Begins went to great lengths to establish not just how much training Bruce needed, but how his tech worked, presenting his gadgets to the audience as near-future advancements; they weren't so sci-fi as to be unrealistic, but they seemed maybe ten years ahead of the curve. This is a dramatically different take on Batman than other adaptations, showing a very human Batman in a very human world.

On the other hand, The Flash film is said to be an adaptation of the popular "Flashpoint" storyline from the comics in which Barry Allen must set things right after finding himself in an alternate reality after changing the past. How close the movie will hew to the comics is unknown, but there is one fact for certain -- The Flash will go to at least one alternate reality outside of the DCEU. Ezra Miller's Flash has actually already done this, making a surprise cameo the CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event and meeting Grant Gustin's Flash. It's implied in their scene that Miller's Flash chooses his superhero moniker only after Gustin's Flash refers to them both by that name.

Miller's Flash is an insanely powerful superhero capable of running across time and realities, so to suddenly have him show up in Nolan's somber, realistic Gotham would seem very strange. It's hard to imagine how that world would react to seeing a superhuman for the first time, let alone how Bale's Batman would deal with such a situation. Miller's Flash is a twitchy, awkward nerd who makes a lot of jokes to ease his tension. He's entertaining for sure, but his interpretation of the character has a big and loud personality that wouldn't fit in with the more reserved performances in Nolan's trilogy.

It's not surprising to hear that a studio has backup casting plans, but in this case, it would have ramifications on the movie that probably wouldn't work for audiences. In this instance, the excitement around Batman appearing in The Flash film is not about Batman per se. It's about which Batman will appear -- the version embodied by Michael Keaton. His performance in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman is many fans' favorite live-action depiction of the character.

Keaton's Batman is also a much better fit with Miller's Flash. The 1989 Batman embraced its comic roots; it was over-the-top, sometimes campy, but also took the source material seriously enough to keep Gotham foreboding and grim. This Batman may never have faced superhumans, -- just disfigured and/or crazy people -- but his world seemed like one Superman or The Flash could exist in.

Michael Keaton is also having a career resurgence after laying low post-Batman. He poked fun at his superhero days in the brilliant Birdman, then went on to make a terrific, ominous turn as the Vulture in the MCU's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton's also been vocal in recent interviews about how much he enjoyed playing Batman. And many fans who adored his Batman as children want to see Keaton back in the role as much as he does.

There's one final reason Bale's Batman would be a bad fit for the DCEU: his story is over. His Batman hung up the cowl and moved on, faking his own death to live happily ever after with Catwoman. Keaton's Batman never got an ending, leaving unexplored territory to work with. This is the most exciting aspect of the return of this version of the character, and one fans hope might turn into something more.

Warner Bros. has long wanted to make a Batman Beyond film, in fact, the only reason they didn't, is because Nolan got his Batman movie together quicker. But Keaton is now the perfect age to portray the weary, lonely Bruce Wayne who trains a young Terry McGinnis to take up the mantle. There has been no confirmation that this is the route the studio is taking, but it's certainly one Batman fans everywhere are clamoring for.

A Batman Beyond film spinning off from The Flash is an exciting prospect, but there's nothing to spin off for Bale's Batman. There's no place to go if Miller's Flash appears in the Nolan universe. That world, while beloved and groundbreaking, is closed.

Directed by Andy Muschietti with a script by Christina Hodson, The Flash stars Ezra Miller. The film arrives in theaters June 3, 2022.
