The Flash Recap & Spoilers: S8 E9, "Phantoms" | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 8, Episode 9, "Phantoms," which aired Wednesday, March 30 on The CW.

Team Flash may have been able to vindicate an innocent man after he was implicated in a series of fiery murders, but the metahuman responsible is still on the loose. Barry Allen is now faster than ever as The Flash but he remains one step behind the pyrokinetic foe as he races to stop the killing spree. And while Team Flash is preoccupied with the serial killer search, Iris West has begun exhibiting mysterious symptoms impacting her memories and cognitive functions in the wake of her future children's own time-travel adventure.

Iris has been privately meeting with Deon, who uses his connection to the Still Force to treat and diagnose her recent memory problems. Deon deduces that Iris may be experiencing time sickness, though he's unaware of why these symptoms began or how extensively they are affecting Iris. At work, Iris reconnects with the returning Sue Dearbon, who has refocused her efforts into running her family's business after dismantling the Black Hole syndicate while her parents were imprisoned for white collar crimes. Looking for a change of scenery to clear her head, Iris decides to accompany Sue to Coast City when she learns that a metahuman capable of phasing through walls has been spotted around the West Coast locale.

As Team Flash continues searching for the mysterious pyrokinetic metahuman incinerating victims across Central City, Chester is unnerved when he sees photographs of the victims. Barry arrives at the scene of the latest murder and witnesses an unnatural black flame consuming the victim -- leading him and Chester to acquire a sample for further analysis to stop the killing spree. Chester begins having vivid nightmares about the black flame being unleashed on S.T.A.R. Labs, leading the black flame to grow stronger in the real world. Allegra (played by Kayla Compton) tries to reach out to Chester to learn what's troubling him... only for the black flame to strike and escape, with even The Flash unable to stop it.

Sue senses something is wrong with Iris when they arrive in Coast City, but the matter is tabled when the two women track down the wall-phasing metahuman named Tanya at a local coffee shop, with the teenage superhuman destroying Iris' tracker before fleeing. Iris and Sue intercept Tanya at her home and learn she was abandoned by her mother. The two agree to help Tanya, with Sue offering her a place to stay until she gets back on her feet and has a better grasp on her powers.

Chester confesses to Allegra that the figure they saw in the black flame was an apparition resembling his late father Quincy P. Runk, though Allegra remains skeptical. As Barry and Frost attempt to contain the flame elsewhere in S.T.A.R. Labs, Cecile realizes it's fueled by grief from those nearby -- and it's now powered by Chester's unresolved pain over his father's death. This culminates in the black flame taking on the form of Quincy and bidding Chester to touch him, wanting claim him as its next victim. Allegra is able to talk Chester back to his senses, with Chester recalling how much his father loved him and rejecting the fiery specter before him.

Chester's rejection of the black flame causes it to flee S.T.A.R. Labs while Team Flash discovers the flame is the metahuman they've been searching for all along. The metahuman serial killer feeds off of raw grief and is determined to find more victims for sustenance, with Team Flash vowing to stop them before they can add to their body count. Barry suggests to Iris that she temporarily remain in Coast City to stay safe, with Iris tacitly agreeing. Shortly after making this decision, Deon resurfaces, ending the episode on an ominous note because he reveals Iris' prognosis -- and it's not good.

Developed for television by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, The Flash airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
