The Flash: Season 8 Episode 7 Review - GameRant

It feels like it's been a rather long time, but The Flash finally returned to form in Season 8 Episode 7, titled "Lockdown." While there have been a few good episodes here and there this season, the vast majority of The Flash this year has just been bad. That was especially true of last week's installment. The episode, which was basically Season Premiere 2.0, decided to spend the entire episode following around Barry Allen's kids from the future. In fact, there was not a single moment of action where The Flash actually did anything. It was an odd way to pick up the season after a layoff that last several months.

It turns out that the first episode of The Flash following the five-episode season-opening miniseries should have been "Lockdown." The episode set the tone for the rest of the season quite a bit better, even if it was still missing one of the things that always makes the show really good. The season is still staying away from that formula, which is all about putting a big bad on stage that actually seems to pose a real problem for the Scarlet Speedster and crew. However, there was a "baddie of the week" who was actually somewhat dangerous, something that had also been missing over the season's first six episodes.

The Flash Season 8 Episode 7 Barry

While Despero was supposed to be a big bad for The Flash, the fact that they made the character tertiary meant that he didn't really seem to be the kind of powerful villain the series has seen in the past. The CW program is at its absolute best when the main characters are in real danger. When there is a chance where it feels like they aren't going to succeed and aren't going to win. Even if everyone knows that at some point they absolutely will. It's still a good time when Barry Allen feels like he's in a situation that is going to at least take some time to figure out. "Lockdown" certainly didn't seem like a situation where Barry wasn't going to be able to save anyone, but there was at least a situation where the heroes needed to actually work some things out in order to win.

Gold Face is an interesting bad buy in The Flash universe because he's not particularly high-powered. He's also not particularly evil. However he's just smart enough as a criminal that he can cause some problems for Barry and company, especially because he's not someone who is going to walk in and just assume that he can overpower everyone. He knows he has to be tricky and sneaky and that's actually a nice change of pace every now and then.

Damion Poitier, who plays the villain also brings a distinctly human villain to the fold, and it's not a stretch to say that he might be one of the best actors to make an appearance on this season of The Flash. That's not to say that everything was perfectly carried out when it came to his time on screen. The writers of The Flash seem to think of themselves as people who can make comedy work, and it is very hit-and-miss when it comes to their follow-through. While there were some really good scenes with Barry and Gold Face when the villain was explaining how he really has to work on his relationship with Ammunette, there were other scenes, such as when he was giving the police captain a count down that seemed like something out of a bad Looney Tunes cartoon.

All in all, the main adventure of this episode of The Flash was pretty well done. It actually offered up something where the audience could watch and wonder just how Barry and the captain were going to get out of the situation. The previous episodes have failed badly at that. There's also something to be said for the fact that there wasn't a single crossover character from somewhere else in the Arrowverse. The show leaned heavily on those crossovers in the first five episodes to their detriment.

Is Team Flash Done?

The Flash Season 8 Episode 7 Captain

If there was one thing that held the episode back from possibly being the best of the season, it's that the show is always at the top of the heap when "Team Flash" is in action. At this point, it feels as if there's a pretty good chance that the show is moving away from that entirely. There were a few minutes that showed Chester sitting back at at headquarters in order to tell The Flash where crime was going on, but it appears more than anything that particular scene was there to show the budding romance between two members of the team.

Ignoring Team Flash actually seems to be a bigger problem with the show in general as it appears that quite a bit of the cast are not spending more than a few minutes on screen with one another in any one episode. This time around, it was especially odd to not really see any appearance or mention of Iris. In past seasons, the show was just a little bit better when the audience got to see Barry Allen's other-half pop up and maybe even help get the group out of a situation. It seemed like an odd move to not have her in the episode at all.

The other "storyline" of the episode was also far from intriguing or compelling, though filling in the gaps how Killer Frost and Caitlyn are co-existing now that they aren't sharing the same body made some sense. However, it's hard to know what exactly the point of the scene where they were hanging out at a bar and arguing over whether or not Killer Frost should be dating the man she's dating. Obviously, they're trying to build out those characters a bit more, but it seemed like a bit of a waste of time. It was almost as though the writers didn't know what to do with about 10 minutes of show time and went with a Killer Frost and Caitlyn side story.

The Flash airs on Wednesday at 8 p.m on The CW.
