- COVID-19 Vaccines for Kids Are Now Available: Following yesterday’s approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Santa Clara County is now offering COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5-11. Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only option for this newly approved age group. Parents and guardians should visit www.sccfreevax.org to sign up for an appointment or to find a convenient walk-in location. Beginning today, all County operated mass vaccination sites are offering the pediatric vaccinations. Beginning tomorrow, Nov. 4, the pediatric vaccine will also be available at all the County’s mobile vaccination clinics. Families are also encouraged to check with their primary care physician or their local pharmacy to see if they are offering vaccine appointments for children. The County is also partnering with school districts to offer vaccination onsite at schools, particularly in the County’s most disproportionately affected communities.
As it has been through the pandemic, vaccinations are provided free to recipients. Health insurance is not required and there are no immigration status questions. For questions about the pediatric vaccines, check in with your health provider or contact the County by calling 2-1-1 or sending a message through the public health order questions online contact form. The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.
Here is what you can expect with your child’s appointment. Your child will need two shots.
- The second shot is three weeks after the first shot.
- Your child will get the Pfizer vaccine.
- This is the vaccine that will be available for kids ages 5 to 11.
- This is a smaller dose than the Pfizer vaccine for adults. It is one-third of an adult dose.
- Your child will get a white CDC COVID-19 vaccine record card.
- Bring your child’s yellow childhood immunization card, if you have one, to be updated too.
- Eligibility for COVID-19 Boosters: Many recipients of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine are now eligible for a booster shot, and ALL recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine who are 18 or older and received their dose at least two months ago are now also recommended for a booster shot. The booster eligibility of those who received their second dose of either Moderna or Pfizer at least six months ago are:
- 65 or older
- 18+ and live in a long-term care facility
- 18+ and have at least one underlying medical condition
- 18+ and work or live in a high-risk setting, such as
- First responders – healthcare workers, emergency services employees, and group home staff
- Education – teachers, support staff, and daycare workers
- Manufacturing workers
- Grocery store workers
- Food and agriculture workers
- Public transit workers
- Corrections workers
- U.S. Postal Service employees
- No Appointment Necessary for COVID-19 Vaccinations: The vaccine clinic locations listed below do not require advance appointments. Vaccines are free, and no insurance or proof of immigration status is required. Anyone age 5 or older is eligible. Staff will be onsite to support language needs and disability access. Individuals seeking vaccination are encouraged to arrive at least one hour before closing time. Additional clinic dates and locations are added frequently, check www.sccfreevax.org for the most up-to-date information. For Santa Clara County locations outside of San José, visit the County’s vaccinations web page.
Booster shots are available at all listed sites to those who received Pfizer or Moderna for their second dose at least six months ago and meet CDC eligibility criteria or everyone 18 and older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago. Third doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines are available for severely immunocompromised people at least 28 days after their second dose.
