The Flash's New Power Means He Shouldn't Lose Ever Again - Screen Rant

The new speedster power that The Flash season 7 just gave Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) should make him impossible to take down (if he keeps it). The Flash season 7, episode 2, “The Speed of Thought” saw Barry gain a new ability that’s being called “speed-thinking”, which is quite literally what its name suggests.

The episode dealt with Barry becoming accustomed to the Artificial Speed Force, which was completed through a heroic sacrifice from Nash Wells (Tom Cavanagh). Apparently, one of the changes that the new Speed Force has made to his powers is that Barry can now think at super-fast speeds, allowing him to process thoughts at an alarming rate. When using his speed-thinking power, Barry would get flashes of how things would play out, allowing him to react accordingly. Thanks to this ability, Barry succeeded in stealing dark matter particles, emotionally breaking Eva (Efrat Dor), defeating his own team, and saving Iris (Candace Patton) against her wishes. The problem is that emotions never factored into his decision-making, and that was the big side-effect of the new power source. In the end, Barry deactivated (or destroyed) it with a blast of lightning, which casts doubt on the future of his new powers.

As the Fastest Man Alive, Barry already had one of the most useful powers in the Arrowverse, but speed-thinking just made him tremendously more dangerous. What Barry can do with his speed-thinking power is very close to predicting the future. He can see what’s about to happen, and the multiple different ways he can react. This way, Barry can find the right response to an attack that hasn’t even been executed yet. If Barry were to keep this power, it would be difficult to imagine him losing to any villain that The Flash throws at him.

Unfortunately, the Scarlet Speedster has a long history of losing to non-speedster villains and having to rely on assistance from his teammates to coordinate plans on beating them. One of the reasons why metahumans slower than Barry are able to beat him is because of surprise attacks and a failure to completely understand a villain’s abilities. After losing and taking some time to analyze the situation, Team Flash is generally able to come up with a way of countering or neutralizing their enemy’s powers. Speed-thinking, though, would make this strategy unnecessary. Armed with his power, Barry would be able figure all of these things out on his own, and without experiencing defeat first. Speed-thinking, combined with all his other speedster powers, would take losing off the table for good.

Of course, the gigantic advantages that come with speed-thinking have a lot to do with why this always felt like a temporary upgrade. The show would be hard-pressed to come up with a villain who could challenge Barry in this state. That’s why this phase may have already ended. However, The Flash has yet to confirm the fate of the Artificial Speed Force; if it’s really gone for good, that would make Nash’s death – as well as the deaths of all the other versions of Wells – pointless.
