The Flash season 7 premiere gives Barry a new suit. Currently the longest-tenured scripted program on The CW network, The Flash first premiered in fall 2014 as a spinoff series from Arrow and the second core building block for The CW’s Arrowverse. It stars Grant Gustin (Glee) as the titular Flash, aka Barry Allen, the legendary hero from the DC Comics universe. The show also stars Candice Patton (The Game) as Iris West-Allen, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, aka Vibe, Danielle Panabaker (Justified) as Caitlin Snow, aka Killer Frost, and Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order) as Joe West.
The suit design of the iconic character is an aspect of The Flash that the show creators have given strict attention since the beginning. It’s evolved over the years, seeing multiple iterations, with some depictions garnering more favorable fan reactions than others. The inaugural season saw a minimalist version with a darker red tone, somewhat divergent from Flash’s traditional appearance. By season 5, Barry had received a ring containing a Flash suit he could change into on the go, similar to that from the comics. Season 6’s design then showcased his most comic book-accurate look, doing away with the leather for a ridged, rubber-like texture, a bright red hue, a chin-strapped face mask, and a more pronounced look to Flash’s trademark ear wings.
The season 7 premiere of The Flash, titled “All’s Wells That Ends Wells.” found Barry rocking his newest costume variant yet. The Flash Twitter page, boasting the headline “New Year, new suit!” shows an animated gif of the moment after Barry emerges from a cryo-pod at the top of the episode. About to give chase to the newly discovered whereabouts of adversary Eva McCulloch, aka Mirror Master, played by Efrat Dor (Sneaky Pete), Flash’s new suit washes over him by way of his signature yellow lightning, showcasing the vibrant red cowl. The most notable enhancement for Barry is the manner in which the new suit appears. Although the episode doesn’t go into detail about the suit’s origin or its design specifics, it is very reminiscent of Kara Danvers’s (Melissa Benoist) upgraded costume which first debuted in Supergirl season 5, episode 1, “Event Horizon.” Much like Barry’s, it morphs from seemingly out of nowhere, utilizing nanotech to remain undetectably out of the way when not in use, yet still able to be activated and deployed at a moment’s notice.
With both Cisco and Caitlin currently on the shelves in the show, the restyling may come courtesy of Team Flash’s latest member, Chester P. Runk, played by Brandon McKnight (The Shape of Water) who entered the fray last season. The eager, genius tinkerer has already made improvements to the team’s gear, like boosting their Gideon com unit upon first joining up, so it’s possible that he’s the orchestrator behind Flash’s flashy threads. It’s also possible that the costume's alterations may be more than strictly just aesthetic, as Flash got shredded every time he faced off against Mirror Master last season. It remains to be seen if the new suit hides some further secrets to help Barry get the edge this season on The Flash.
