The Superman reboot news repeats a similar mistake as the DCEU did for the Arrowverse that involves The Flash. One of the latest DC properties to have come to screen is Superman & Lois, the latest DC TV series for The CW. The Arrowverse spinoff was in the works since last 2019 as The CW became the next platform to tell another Superman story. Due to the global pandemic, the wait for the series was even longer as it would have otherwise premiered in fall 2020. After a long wait, Superman & Lois finally premiered last month as they joined the Arrowverse line-up.
However, only three days later, Warner Bros. confirmed that the feature side was officially rebooting Superman for the big screen. Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the screenplay for the film that will be produced by J.J. Abrams. The reboot will also feature a black Superman, which will be the first time that the DC icon is played by a man of color. As exciting as the plans are, it will likely be a few years until it comes out as the global pandemic is still making production a challenge. But the fact that Warner Bros. confirmed a reboot is coming not even a week after Superman & Lois premiered, brings up a very similar situation from 7 years ago.
This isn't the first time the TV side has had some of their thunder stolen like this. On October 7, 2014, The Flash officially premiered on The CW and became the highest-rated series premiere in 5 years. So far, the pilot is the most viewed one out of all The CW shows that have come and gone. It was also the first Arrowverse spinoff as Arrow did some of the groundwork for it as they were expanding their universe. It was therefore a major deal when Warner Bros. a week later after the second episode aired, announced their initial DC movies slate which also included The Flash.
On October 15, 2014, Ezra Miller was officially cast as the cinematic version of Barry Allen, with The Flash slated to release originally in 2018. This was a very controversial moment, not because of the casting, but the timing of it. Even if it's Warner Bros. TV producing the series, it's still within the overall studio as they own the DC properties. Arrow star Stephen Amell said in an interview that year that despite his excitement about Miller's The Flash casting, that it's still really poor timing for Grant Gustin's iteration of the character.
DC TV and films can and always have co-existed, that will never change. But the timing of announcing something can still carry a lot of weight. What happened for The Flash is, more or less, what happened for Superman & Lois in regard to the Superman reboot. One can argue that it was for business reasons, but it still sends the wrong message as a company to do this right after a series premiere of a new show. It's especially bizarre that it happened last month over a year after Crisis on Infinite Earths, essentially, established that the TV and film division has some kind of working dynamic.
That was even a big point in one of the DC FanDome panels last year where talent involved with DC TV and DC Films celebrated the collaboration for Crisis when Miller and Gustin shared the screen together. To then see the 2014 situation be repeated again 7 years later for Superman & Lois, just comes off as odd. Similar to what Amell said in the 2014 interview for Flash, Warner Bros. should have let the Arrowverse's Superman have a moment that lasted longer than just 1 week. The new Superman reboot, as exciting as the new approach is, a massive déjà vu for the Arrowverse with Superman & Lois.
