Superman And Flash Just Recreated Their Famous Race To Save Earth - Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers to DCeased: Dead Planet #7 below!

The Flash claims to be the Fastest Man Alive, so it was only a matter of time before he would have to defend that title, one of his frequent challengers being the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Both heroes have repeatedly raced each other over the years and the results have been a mixed bag full of draws or one besting the other at the finish line. Although there is no definitive answer as to who is faster, this playful competition has continued with members of the Flash Family and the House of El, the latest taking place in a separate universe altogether. In the not-so-zombie apocalypse world called DCeased, Superman and the Flash can't help making their world-saving mission a little interesting, challenging each other to see who can cure the world first.

This fan-favorite contest began in Superman #199 (1967) when Superman and Flash were asked to race around the world to help raise money to help developing countries.  The two Justice League members sped around the world three times, overcoming natural obstacles as well as criminals trying to manipulate the outcome to their advantage. This race would end in a draw but that wasn't the case when they raced again in World's Finest Comics #198 (1970) where Barry Allen won, literally crawling to the finish line to save the universe. Although it wasn't the last time either hero raced, the next official contest happened with Wally West filling in for the deceased Barry in Adventures of Superman (1990).  In this instance, Wally won this race around the world, a victory that he would later repeat years later. When Barry Allen returned to life, he raced Superman again but stated that he had been holding back in the past and blew past him. The latest entry in this fan-favorite contest occurred in Superman: Up in the Sky #4 (2019) where ten laps around the world at superspeed ended with Superman the winner.

In DCeased: Dead Planet #7 by Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine, the surviving heroes are juggling multiple life-threatening situations on their former home world that they're trying to save. With the Amazo Army destroying the very Anti-Living the heroes are trying to save, Cyborg is asked to whip up a computer virus to shut them down while Superman and the Flash are given the task of curing two billion people as quickly as possible. When Superman asks if the former Kid Flash is ready, he says, "Sure. I'll race you." With Superman taking Africa and Europe and Flash taking North and South America, they agree to meet up to tackle Asia together and off they go.

Although both heroes complete their task before the Anti-Living realize what's going on, this contest is more about referencing the former fake rivalry instead of taking it seriously. In the past, the races were usually to raise money for charity or to save the universe when in this case, this is a race against time where the benefit is the restoration of Earth's people from the grip of the techno-organic virus that almost destroyed everything five years ago. Both heroes move at lightning speeds, not stopping to answer the confused masses of people regaining their life and sanity, and they are only interrupted when other pressing matters come to their attention.

In the end, the Amazo Army is shut down, all remaining Earth people and heroes are cured, and other dire threats like the demon Trigon are taken care of. With Superman stopping to help in the fight against Trigon and Wally letting others help distribute the cure worldwide, this latest race between Superman and the Flash seems to have gone full circle by ending at a draw, similar to the first contest over fifty years ago. Although the existence of other threats in the DCeased universe remain, the heroes have earned this brief happy ending where they were able to save the world once again and hopefully there will be chances for another rematch in the future.
