Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: The Flash #1
In DC's Future State, the Flash Family suffers a major blow that will reshape them. In an attempt to save Wally West, Barry Allen gathers the Flash Family members to coordinate a rescue plan in Future State: The Flash #1. Everything goes downhill as Barry miscalculates the threat they face and not everyone comes out alive.
Future State is a two-month event that gives readers an insight into the possible futures of the DC universe. DC has emphasized that the futures shown are not definitive and are just potential future outcomes. This is lucky for the Flash Family as their recent foray didn't exactly go according to plan. Over the years, there have been many characters who have assumed the mantle of the Flash. When brought together they are known as the Flash Family, a group of superpowered heroes who possess super-speed and a connection to the Speed Force.
Future State: The Flash #1, written by Brandon Vietti with art by Dale Eaglesham, sees the Flash Family coming together to rescue Wally, who has been possessed by Famine and turned into a villain. Despite his heroic intentions, Barry's plan to save Wally has shocking ramifications. Bart Allen and Jay Garrick are killed. Without a doubt, the Flash Family will not be the same without them. The events of issue one shake them to their core and the future doesn't look bright for the heroic family of speedsters. Their tightly knit connection hangs in the balance. After the events of the first issue, readers are left questioning, what will Barry do in issue two, and will his choices cost the lives of other Flash Family members?
Undoubtedly, Jay and Bart's killing is a huge statement and sets the stakes. It proves that Famine is to be feared and that it will take all of Barry's genius to defeat him. But their deaths could lead to an unforeseen shift in the team's dynamics as it is likely that questions will arise regarding Barry's leadership. Another reshape of the team could be that Barry goes solo as evidenced by issue one's penultimate page. Barry leaves the room where Jay lies lifeless, distraught and tearful, but committed to saving or stopping his possessed friend. Barry's mistakes may seemingly drive him away from the team, risking his own life to protect the others. Turning his evidence vault into a laboratory, Barry promises himself that no more death will be caused and that he will use science to defeat his newest enemy, Wally West.
With two team members down, the Flash and friends have little hope as they turn to mourn. However, possibly there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That light is Jess Chambers, the Flash of the future. Introduced in DC's Very Merry Multiverse #1, they are the first non-binary character to join the Justice League. Additionally, Jess is the fifth speedster to take on the mantle of the Flash. Even with Jess living more than a decade in the future, Future State proves there is still hope for the Flash Family to live on even in the darkest of times. The legacy of the Flash will continue, no matter how many heroes fall, they will keep speeding onwards.
Ultimately, Future State has reshaped the multiverse as we know it, shifting perceptions of the heroes we know and introducing new ones who may return. Luckily for the Flash Family, the future they're in is only a potential future. Hence, readers may see Bart and Jay return very much alive. However, this reshaping proves that the stakes have never been higher for the Flash Family. Now more than ever, they need each other.
