The Flash Tried Doctor Strange's Endgame Trick... And FAILED - Screen Rant

The Flash's speed can be used in a variety of ways, one such way allows him to see all possible outcomes, but with a major cost. The Flash is best known as a "speedster," or a hero who utilizes super speed, and while it may initially seem that Flash would be less powerful than, say, Superman his speed grants him access to a large number of powers.

Phasing through solid objects, travelling through time, and even flight are some of the feats the Flash is capable of, making the Scarlet Speedster one of the more versatile super-heroes in DC Comics. For most of Barry Allen's super-hero career, he would primarily utilize his physical powers to fight crime, and did not experiment any further beyond his more well known powers. However, one of Barry's most powerful, and often less utilized powers, was not a physical power, but rather a mental one.

In 2011's The Flash #2, Flash met with scientist Darwin Elias, who sought to increase the Flash's speed and make him a more efficient hero. After running some tests, Elias concludes that, while The Flash's body is more than capable of running at high-speeds, he has not used his mind in such a capacity, and his mind has failed to "keep up" with his body. Elias then tells Barry of "auto-cognition," which can allow for the expansion of the human brain and cognition, provided Barry can use his speed on his mind, rather than his body. After some practice, Barry manages to access this state of auto cognition, which allows him to focus intensely at every detail at once super quickly. Furthermore, Barry can even, to a degree, predict various scenarios that could happen in the future, which would grant him enough time to pick a scenario where he could potentially save the most lives. While this power initially seems useful, with Barry using it to save innocent bystanders from various hazards, he learns the hard way that this power comes with consequences.

During a blackout in Central City, Barry Allen, and his then girlfriend Patty Spivot, begin to search for Barry's longtime friend Manuel Lago. Manuel was a longtime friend of Barry's, and was presumed dead, but returned to Central City in an attempt to leave his former life as a C.I.A. operative. Manuel also has an army of clones chasing him, formally known as "Mob Rule," an adverse side effect of Manuel's advanced healing process spawning "new Manuel's" from lopped off body parts.  Patty managed to track down a possible location that Manuel would have been taken to, and both Barry and Patty arrive in said location, a warehouse, and manage to find Manuel. However, the trio get spotted by Manuel's clones, leaving the trio to make their getaway. While Patty and Manuel manage to escape, Barry stays behind to deal with Manuel's clones, and attempts to use his "auto-cog" powers to determine the best course of action. However, while Barry is lost in thought, he gets shot in the head, and the Manuel clones believe Barry to be dead.

A few hours after the Manuel's had fled, Barry awoke alive and well. Barry recalled that he had just managed to phase the bullet through his body as it made contact, leaving him alive, but stunned and unconscious. Barry determined that, as he uses his auto-cog, despite his ability to see any possible outcome is also left vulnerable while he calculates the most effective situation for him. While Barry is in his auto-cog state, he confuses reality and probability, as he believed himself victorious over Manuel's clones upon awakening. In reality, Barry had only imagined himself victorious in one of the many scenarios he predicted in his enhanced mental state. Barry resolves to hold off on using his powers until he gets a better handle on them, and decides to take action, rather than predict the future until the situation with Manuel is resolved. In the aftermath of the conflict with Manuel and his clones, Barry opts to only use his newfound auto-cog power in select situations (such as when Gorilla Grodd invaded Central City). While Barry does not seem opposed to using this power, though more sparingly than his other speed-related powers, he has not used this power in awhile, but why?

Avengers Infnity War Endgame Doctor Strange Futures

The power to see the future can mean life or death when trying to save lives, but it's completely useless if The Flash cannot act to save anyone. The Flash confuses reality and fiction using his precognitive powers, and while he could have enough time to actually act on one of his visions and save people, the possibility remains that he would actually let people die due to inaction. In combat, confusing reality and probability would almost certainly lead to another scenario where Flash loses his life to Captain Cold or Reverse Flash, all the while believing himself to be the victor in said fight. In the case with Manuel's clones, Had Barry simply used his super-speed as normal he could have defeated them quickly and without potential casualties.

Barry was so caught up in testing his powers in a life or death scenario, powers he had no mastery over, that he forgot to prioritize his own safety. On the other hand, mastery of this power could actually allow Barry to better save multiple lives in Central City in a faster amount of time. With some more practice in a controlled environment, and only using this power when its fully mastered, The Flash's ability to predict the future could allow him to save more lives than ever.
