Many teaching jobs in New Jersey pay more than the national average, but not all of them do.

The median pay for a teacher in New Jersey was $70,815 in 2019-20, according to data provided by the New Jersey Department of Education. But which district a teacher is in can make a huge difference — the lowest paying district has a median salary 2.5 times lower than the highest paying district.

In East Newark Borough, the median salary is $44,258, but in Northern Valley Regional, it’s $113,869, state data shows.

The reason for the pay differential could be multi-fold, one expert told NJ Advance Media, ranging from these districts having younger teachers, to not retaining teachers well.

Twenty of the lowest paying districts are charter schools, something else that could play a role, Dr. Jennifer Robinson, executive director of the Center of Pedagogy at Montclair State University, told NJ Advance Media. Although charter schools are public districts, they usually consist of just a single school.

Not being able to share resources with other districts can make finances tight and reduce salaries, Robinson said.

And charter schools can be a starting point for early career teachers, some of whom will leave in a few years. More teachers at the bottom of the salary ladder will drive the median down, she said.

“(Charter school teachers) may be high-quality teachers, but between the amount of work, above and beyond, planning for your classes, planning for the work that has to happen in those schools, plus your salary, plus wherever it is that you would like to live, that churn is likely to happen,” Robinson said.

She said there is no data that she is aware of that draws a correlation between student success and teacher salaries, nor one that correlates success to attending a charter school. But having a balance of new-career and experienced teachers can help make the learning experience richer for all involved, she said.
