This is a proposal for an individual monetary tax levied on individuals who have full access to COVID-19 vaccination but who, for whatever reason, refuse the vaccination. Such a refusal is a significant attack on fellow humans. It’s not just about transmitting the virus to other people; it’s also about becoming a incubator for the mutations.
As an illustration of what that means — the awful situation now in India. They are dealing with a double hit virus mutation. It is generating a second wave havoc. Only a few weeks ago they were celebrating. These new variants attacking the people of India were incubated in the bodies of victims of the virus. Most people in India did not have access to a vaccine. They did not have a choice about becoming an incubator.
Turning down an offered vaccination means increased risk of infection as well as choosing the option to become another candidate as an incubator. Becoming a voluntary incubator puts everyone around them at risk. Enough variants and all the vaccines available today could become useless. Those who have chosen the vaccine could become vulnerable all over again. That could have an impact on the whole world human population. Refusing a vaccine is not a decision to take lightly or without understanding the implications.
Knowing what we know, I don’t think a refusal choice should be left free of consequences. Refusing a real and well-tested vaccine for COVID-19 is a decision that potentially has an enormous cost. I believe the individual decider refusing the vaccine should pay a very large tax in an attempt to offset the costs of potential damage.
A hefty tax — enough to make a difference — could also provide an incentive for taking the vaccine.
