The Flash season 7 has made Killer Frost’s story pointless for the show, especially for the current plot. After being split from Caitlin Snow, Danielle Panabaker’s other Arrowverse character, Frost, received a major story arc that held her accountable for the crimes she committed in the show’s early seasons.
After being relentlessly pursued by Kristen Kramer (Carmen Moore), Frost was arrested and sent to trial where she had to answer for everything she’s done in the past. When given an opportunity to get out of any jailtime on the condition that she take the metahuman cure, Frost stuck to her principles and refused. She even accepted a lifetime prison sentence to avoid it. And just as many suspected, it didn’t take long at all for her new situation to be undone. Frost came back into play in The Flash season 7, episode 11, “Family Matters, Part 2” when she broke out of Iron Heights to help the police detain some of the escaped criminals.
The Flash offered an anti-climactic resolution to this arc at the end of the episode when she visited Caitlin and told her that she was let out on probation because of the assistance she provided to the Central City police. Now, the door is open for Killer Frost to rejoin Team Flash. Part of the problem with this though, is that it feels like a rushed way of bringing her back into the story. Plus, they used the most obvious solution to her dilemma, one that had already been ruled out. They determined earlier in the season that Frost’s heroic acts weren’t enough to earn her forgiveness from the legal system, but that’s exactly what happened anyway.
Not only that, but this and the change Kramer has brought to law enforcement in Central City diminish the impact of Killer Frost’s biggest moment in season 7. Her decision to go to prison for the rest of her life amounted to a huge sacrifice, which was arguably the most memorable and heroic thing she’s ever done in the Arrowverse. The idea behind it was that if she took the cure, it would set a new legal precedent which would lead to other metahumans being administered the cure against their will. That was why she declined to use it. But shortly after that, Kramer revealed that the police can now employ it as they see fit when combatting super-powered criminals. With that on the table, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes an official form of punishment as well.
Stopping this from happening was the whole point of Killer Frost going to prison. So looking back at the arc that Frost has had in The Flash season 7, it feels a lot less meaningful than it did at the time, which is a bit disappointing. However, it’s possible that the remainder of the season will move her story forward in an interesting way. The ending of Frost’s prison arc teased an all-new story by setting up Chillblaine (Jon Cor) as her new love interest, which is something that she’s never had on the show.
