The Flash season 7 Easter egg introduces Arrowverse’s Negative Flash. Nearly a year after season 6 ended abruptly due to the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns, The Flash picked up where last season left off. With Iris West-Allen still stuck inside the Mirrorverse, Eva McCulloch (aka, Mirror Mistress) freely roaming the real world, and Barry Allen’s speedster powers at only one percent, the season 7 premiere had a lot to get through. However, a comic book Easter egg was subtly alluded to in the episode and it could set up the next storyline following the close of the Mirrorverse arc.
With the senior Team Flash temporarily gone, Chester P. Runk and Allegra Garcia stepped up in a major way in the season 7 premiere, titled “All’s Wells That Ends Wells.” While Chester monitored the S.T.A.R. Labs comms for any emergencies, he occupied himself by reading a massive book called Quantum Gravity & The Universe by Dr. Meena Dhawan. Chester addresses the author as though she’s there, obviously intrigued by the ideas and concepts Meena has written about, while also verbalizing some of his own about the universe and its neural connections.
Although the moment didn’t lend to the plot of the episode, it does tease the potential arrival of Negative Flash. In the comics, Meena Dhawan debuts in 2016’s The Flash #3 and is originally a S.T.A.R. Labs scientist who gains speed force powers and helps train others with the same abilities. Meena battled Godspeed, a speedster intent on stealing speed from others, before being kidnapped by Black Hole. When she emerged, she stole the negative speed force — an artificial energy source created by Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash — powers from Barry to become Negative Flash.
The Flash first introduced the concept of the negative speed force in season 5, when Barry and Iris’ daughter Nora West-Allen tapped into it to return to the present from 2049. Reverse-Flash taught her how to connect with the negative speed force, which also relied on Nora calling upon her negative emotions to gain more power. While the connection to the negative speed force ultimately led to Nora’s demise, it seems like it will make a comeback in season 7. Considering that Godspeed has been confirmed to return in season 7, the Easter egg about Meena might signal her arrival and potential team-up alongside the speedster villain.
While Barry, Iris, and Team Flash will likely defeat Mirror Mistress, Black Hole will probably continue to exist regardless. Moreover, questions regarding why Godspeed is siphoning off speed have yet to be answered despite several appearances. Meena could be introduced as someone who has already been brainwashed by Black Hole. Maybe she already works for Eva’s tech company before things go awry and she becomes Negative Flash. Conversely, she may already be Negative Flash and is actually the one behind all the different versions of Godspeed. Perhaps she can’t maintain her powers and needs more, which is why she’s been after Barry since season 6. After all, the negative speed force can have, uh, negative effects on a person. Either way, the Easter egg in The Flash season 7 premiere confirms Meena’s existence in the Arrowverse and paves the way for her turn as Negative Flash in the future.
