Irvine will use $17.7 million in state and federal funds to offer help to residents who have struggled to pay their rent during the coronavirus pandemic.

The emergency rental assistance program will cover rent owed between April 2020 and March 2021. It will cover either 25% of a tenant’s back rent, or if the tenant’s landlord participates in the program and forgives 20% of what’s owed, the city program will pay the remaining 80%.

“I continue to hear from our community about the hardships they face with job loss and financial strains,” Mayor Farrah Khan said in a press release. “It is vital that we help keep our residents in their homes. The rental assistance program will help us achieve this goal by providing relief for those who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.”

Irvine residents can apply anytime between Monday, March 8, and March 19. Aid recipients will be chosen by lottery on March 22. The Orange County United Way will administer the program for the city.

To be eligible, renters must meet income guidelines, have a current lease or proof of past payments, and be able to show financial hardship from the pandemic. The program is for residential tenants; businesses are not eligible.

More information on the program guidelines and how to apply is at www.cityofirvine.org/erap.
