Thanks to new footage of The Flash from CinemaCon 2022, it's already been confirmed that Batman fans should be pretty satisfied by what the upcoming DCEU-reboot film is offering. While in development for over 8 years, Barry Allen's multiverse adventure is going to be about far more than just the Fastest Man Alive. Case in point, the bulk of the newly released footage kept the majority of its focus on Michael Keaton's return to the cape and cowl, confirming that his presence in the film will be fan service at its finest.
Directed by Andy Muschietti, The Flash will feature Barry Allen racing through the multiverse, played once again by Ezra Miller. Thanks to the first teaser trailer, it's been confirmed that Barry will be teaming not only with an alternate version of himself and Supergirl, but also with Michael Keaton's Batman. However, Keaton's version of Bruce Wayne won't be the only Dark Knight joining the film, as it's been confirmed that Ben Affleck's Batman will be featured as well.
The new CinemaCon footage for The Flash is largely focused on Keaton's character, who will at one point in the film say the classic 1989 line, "You want to get nuts? Let's get nuts". He'll also be seen wearing his classic costume standing amid a Batcave full of alternate variations of the original suit from the Tim Burton-directed films. This Bruce has grey hair, which confirms that Barry Allen and company will be interacting with an older Caped Crusader who's been a vigilante for quite some time in his own Burton universe. However, Keaton's Batman will still be part of the action, seen driving a Batcycle while a car flies overhead. Clearly, this new footage confirms that Batman fans should be getting everything they're hoping for with Keaton's return when The Flash releases in 2023.
Although these described Batman moments are pure fan service and the epitome of nostalgia bait, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Spider-Man: No Way Home set the gold standard in giving fans exactly what they want while still using them in some dynamic and surprising ways. Both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire referenced lines from their past films, just as this classic Batman apparently will. The trick will be what else Keaton's Batman will bring to the table beyond the nostalgia. Case in point, Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men roles went beyond cameos. They were core to the narrative and were instrumental not only in saving the world, but also served as major foundations for Tom Holland's Spider-Man going forward as a brand-new hero.
Given the reports and rumors that Keaton's Batman will be replacing Affleck as the primary Batman of the DCEU once The Flash reboots the universe, it seems as though the 1989 Dark Knight will be getting new life. That would certainly make him much more than a simple cameo. While this new footage has already helped to confirm that Batman fans will be getting what they're expecting, it seems as though Keaton will be offering more than just nostalgia when The Flash releases in May.
