Spoilers for Flash #774 Ahead!
While Captain Boomerang is commonly known as an expendable member of DC's Suicide Squad, most fans seem to have forgotten he started his career off as a Flash villain. As part of Captain Cold's Rogues Gallery, Captain Boomerang has been fighting the Flash since the villain first premiered in 1960. Born to an Australian mother in poverty, George "Digger" Harkness crafted his first boomerang as a child and quickly discovered his natural skills. He eventually used these skills to commit petty crimes, which led him to join the Suicide Squad. But why is Flash a fan of someone who used to be his villain?
Wally West has become DC's main Flash again, putting him between his superhero life and his family. During Jeremy Adams and Cristian Duce's The Flash #774, Wally takes his daughter, Irey West, to a daddy-daughter dance. When they arrive, they find everyone asleep. They soon find a new villain, Dr. Nightmare (loosely based on Doctor Destiny from the Justice League animated series). He has created a device that brings nightmarish creatures to reality. While hiding from him, Irey tells her father that this villain is "cooler than the boomerang guy you said was cool."
While Captain Boomerang is a villain, the Rogues have a strict moral code that occasionally teams them up with heroes. Captain Cold's Rogues Code keeps them in check and debatably makes them anti-heroes. They always have each other's backs, are not allowed to use drugs, are not allowed to use another Rogue's identity while the member still lives, and are not allowed to kill superheroes, women, or children. Both Barry and Wally somewhat admire this code of conduct from the Rogues, even if they constantly steal from innocent citizens.
In Forever Evil: Rogues Rebellion #6, by Brian Buccellato and Scott Hepburn, the Rogues actually save Keystone City and Central City from Gorilla Grodd. The heroes all disappear from Earth thanks to the Crime Syndicate, and Central City falls under the control of the telepathic gorilla. The Rogues find this unacceptable and reclaim the city back, saving more lives than they've ever ruined. It shows that when push comes to shove, the Rogues were the original team that created the "bad guys doing good" premise.
During John Ostrander and John Byrne's Legends series from 1986, Captain Boomerang joined Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad. When Blockbuster dies, Captain Boomerang gets furious at Amanda Waller, discovering they were all expendable. Rick Flag reveals he is expendable too and begins to sympathize with Digger. Flag eventually lets the Squad go, and they are free to do as they please. Digger heads to New York City to cause some chaos, and he immediately gets taken out by Wally West's Flash and Beast Boy. Wally almost feels bad that he needed help defeating Captain Boomerang, showing hints of pity towards the Rogue.
Time will only tell how Wally will adjust to his new life as Flash and a father. Now that he's back in Central City, encountering more of the Rogues seems inevitable. In fact, Flash #773 shows Wally talking Heatwave out of his mischievous ways, and Flash promises to help Mick reform. Perhaps issue #774's Dr. Nightmare will join the Rogues too. It seems that being a father has inspired Wally more to support the Rogues as troubled humans instead of just beating them up. Captain Boomerang is more famous as a Suicide Squad member these days, but perhaps he can take some time to visit his old friends back in Central City.
