As parts of the New Jersey continue recovering from a devastating storm that caused widespread flooding and killed dozens last week, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for seven counties on Wednesday.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected to move through the region on Wednesday and some areas could see up to 2 inches of rainfall in a short period of time, the NWS reported.
Given already saturated soils from last week’s deluge, which dumped up to 10 inches of rain in some areas, additional downpours could lead to flooding in flood-prone spots and other low-lying areas.
The watch, in effect from Wednesday afternoon through late Wednesday night, includes Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.
Some of these were among the hardest hit counties when remnants of Tropic Storm Ida pounded New Jersey last week, claiming the lives of at least 27 people.
President Joseph Biden has approved the state’s request to declare major disaster declarations in Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Passaic, Bergen and Somerset counties as a result of the storm. Biden toured New Jersey storm damage on Tuesday afternoon.
The weather service urged residents to continue monitoring forecasts and prepare to take action if a flash flood warning is issued.
