WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7, Episode 15, "Enemy at the Gates," which aired Tuesday on The CW.
While The Flash Season 7 has seen Barry Allen and the rest of Team Flash focused on threats like Mirror Monarch and the emergence of new Forces across Central City, a familiar foe has resurfaced to menace the Scarlet Speedster: Godspeed. What is even more troubling is that the white-clad supervillain has not returned alone, boasting multiple duplicates as they outrace and overwhelm Barry and his friends. And while Team Flash managed to live to fight another day, the circumstances of their salvation suggest that an epic conflict is taking place decades in the future of the Arrowverse.
Barry and Iris found their plans to start a family of their own abruptly interrupted by the arrival of not one but six duplicates of Godspeed in Central City. While the original Godspeed was the very first supervillain confronted by Barry and Iris' superhero daughter Nora in the year 2049, duplicates would periodically surface during the present-day, starting at the beginning of Season 6. Initially, unintelligible due to their speech patterns resembling that of a computer modem, Barry learned the duplicates were sent to drain him of his speed by a mysterious figure that craved "infinite velocity."
This sinister goal appears to be very much intact as the Godspeed duplicates arrive during Season 7, with the villains working together to target and isolate Barry and subdue him. However, Barry finds help from the most unexpected source when a different group of Godspeed duplicates arrives in Central City as the Scarlet Speedster stands on the cusp of defeat, attacking the villainous duplicates hunting him and triggering an all-out brawl. And, just as quickly as all the duplicates appeared, they all vanish in a flash of electrical energy, likely back to the future, leaving Barry and Team Flash with even more questions than they started with.
In the comics, Godspeed has shown himself able to duplicate himself through the Speed Force, though the process creates a severe amount of pain and destabilizes his connection to his power source. With the warring factions, this suggests that either a portion of Godspeed duplicates have either developed a conscience and rebelled against their villainous benefactor, or a separate benefactor has quietly been creating Godspeed duplicates to carry out orders of his own, in opposition to the Godspeed resulting in the high-speed, time-spanning conflict over the fate of Barry Allen and the Speed Force.
With over half of The Flash Season 7 complete, the last stretch of episodes is already looking to the future, with Nora and Barry and Iris' time-displaced grandson, Bart Allen, all set to appear in Central City's relative present. With Nora's own superhero origins linked directly to Godspeed, XS' return could stand to answer more questions about the villainous speedster and the strange conflict amongst the Godspeed duplicates that has spilled out decades into the past. And with the identity of the true mastermind behind the Godspeed attacks still very much a mystery, the ultimate antagonist of The Flash Season 7 may be the most powerful that Team Flash has faced yet.
The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh. New episodes air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
