Microsoft takes the next step toward banning all existence of Adobe Flash - Poc Network

This has been the year that Adobe Flash saw its final moments. The last few scraps being cleaned up here and there within modern OS environments. Most of its existence being wiped away at the very start of the year as major browsers and other applications wiped their ties of the old and always vulnerable software.

It has been quite a difficult task since there are so many ways that one could install Flash on their system. From browser installations, to direct installations from Adobe’s website, to ports of the player being installed by your operating system itself.

Microsoft is making the next big push with the KB4577586 update that is rolling out to users via Windows Settings for Windows 10 installs (as well as Windows 8.1). It will clean out any installation of the software that was put there by Windows in the past.

So what do you do if you are still holding on to a bunch of Flash media on your system that you don’t want to lose for nostalgia’s sake? There are plenty of conversion tools out there to convert or even batch-convert SWF or FLA files to alternative formats (animated gifs, or video formats). If you have a system that still has Flash Professional installed, you can use that to do all of this as well.

For more complex items like Flash games, there are some tool options out there for simple tasks, but in most cases, you will have to write them off as lost or build them out with a new platform to deliver them through.

With the vulnerabilities that have always plagued Flash and the fact that it is no longer being updated/supported, it just isn’t worth keeping it on your system and taking a risk. So once again, we say goodbye to the software that has entertained us for so many years (even though it was riddled with security holes most of the time).
