Warning! Spoilers for The Flash #769
The Flash has amassed a fortune in an even edgier way than Batman. Just as Bruce Wayne has access to the funds of Wayne Enterprises, Barry Allen has something similar in the form of Central City’s superhero tourist destination, the Flash Museum.
If superheroes existed in the real world, they probably wouldn’t be able to fund their own war on crime. Fans have always appreciated that aspect of Batman, as it feels logical for Bruce Wayne to have access to large sums of money to support his crusade in Gotham City. However, many superheroes don’t have the same wealth to finance such a venture. Over the years, the Flash’s association with STAR Labs has helped fill the gap, explaining how he could come across such quality tech with a CSI forensic’s salary. However, with the Flash Museum, Barry now has access to more money than ever before.
Recently, Barry Allen revealed some noteworthy spending choices regarding the museum in The Flash #769, written by Jeremy Adams with art by Jack Herbert, Brandon Peterson, and Darko Lafuente. While talking with Oliver Queen, CEO of Queen Industries, Barry mentions that the money that is spent at the Flash Museum goes directly to its “running costs,” and that what’s left goes to charity. It’s then expanded to show that those running costs involve a secret state-of-the-art laboratory. Similar to how Batman has embezzled money from Wayne Enterprises to fund his vigilante bat-technology, such as the Batmobile and the Batcave, Barry takes advantage of his resources. Even though it’s technically for the greater good, the Flash himself is taking money away from charity.
Unlike Batman, Barry doesn’t seem to fully grasp why what he’s doing is ethically questionable. Although Bruce has likely realized that embezzling from his own company is just another decision in line with his vigilante behavior, the Flash isn’t as thoughtful. It’s a real question of ethics, as the panel depicts that the Flash Museum’s merchandise, including shirts and a copy of the first Flash, Jay Garrick’s helmet, goes to an endeavor that visitors might actually support anyway. It seems silly that Barry wouldn’t just mention publicly that a portion of the money made helps the Flash do his job as a superhero, and conduct experiments.
Of course, one of Barry’s most notable experiments resulted in Flashpoint, where he went back in time to save his mother, resulting in an alternate timeline ravaging the reality he knew. At the end of the day, this slight depiction of how Barry chooses to go about finances with the museum showcases a character flaw readers hadn’t seen explored before. Still, Flash is at least open with Oliver Queen AKA Green Arrow about how he gets the money needed for his lab. On the other hand, Batman might not speak so proudly about how he fights crime on a financial level.
