As "America's Got Talent: The Champions" host Terry Crews explained at the beginning of Monday's Finals performance episode, this season's winner will be chosen by "our Superfans." That's a big departure from previous seasons of the show when everyday viewers like YOU got to vote for your favorite. So who exactly are these so-called Superfans and how were they chosen to receive this special honor of picking the ultimate champion? We spoke with NBC earlier this season and got all of the answers to your burning questions.
Since "AGT" has always been about the people's vote, the producers didn't want the winner of "Champions" to be chosen simply by the judging panel. However, as this spinoff series was not live (it was filmed months ago), that presented a problem that only the Superfan voters could solve. Thus, these delegates from all 50 states of America were created to represent people at home, as they were "reflective and as diverse as our nationwide viewing audience," NBC told us.
So how were the Superfans originally chosen? The show's "research team sourced delegates from all 50 states who have been longtime and dedicated viewers of 'AGT,'" the network divulged. We can take that to mean that these voters had a firm grasp on the history of the reality TV show and weren't just casual seat-fillers.
The Superfans watched each performance from "off-camera in a controlled environment within the show's venue," and thus were not in the audience sitting behind judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel. While the specific number of Superfans was not revealed, NBC did say that "there was some cross-over from week-to-week, similar to what you would find with any voting show."
For Monday's Finals as well as each of the five performance episodes, the Superfans got to pick their favorite act by voting "via electronic keypads." They previously sent through comedian Preacher Lawson, card magician Shin Lim and singers Cristina Ramos, Paul Potts and Brian Justin Crum. NBC expressed that even though they trust their regular judges, it was important for "the final decision [to come] down to our loyal viewers." Find out who the Superfans chose as the winner when the season finale of "AGT: Champions" airs Monday, February 18 on NBC.
