Not so fast, The Flash. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is mulling its options regarding its big-budget tentpole film The Flash starring controversial actor Ezra Miller. Everything is reportedly on the table, including potentially scrapping the $200 million film altogether.
Miller has had a number of run-ins with the law this calendar year. They were arrested twice in Hawaii—the first time in March on charges of disorderly conduct and harassment, the second in April stemming from an allegation of second-degree assault. They pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct; the harassment charge was dropped. The actor was released without charge in the second-degree assault investigation. This week, police announced that Miller was charged with felony burglary for allegedly stealing bottles of alcohol from an unoccupied residence in Stamford, Vermont, and was issued a citation to appear for arraignment at the criminal division of Vermont Superior Court in Bennington on September 26.
Even beyond the arrests, Miller has been involved in a slew of controversies and allegations. Last week, an Insider exposé on the actor revealed that two separate families have filed orders of protection against the actor, claiming that Miller groomed their children. Just yesterday, Rolling Stone reported that officials in Vermont have been trying to locate a mother and her three children who had allegedly been living at Miller’s Vermont residence.
Despite all of this, Miller reportedly filmed reshoots for DC’s The Flash this summer. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Miller “participated in regularly scheduled additional photography,” apparently without incident, prior to the burglary charge. As of now, DC and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav have made no indication that The Flash’s scheduled June 2023 release date is in jeopardy.
But that could change. Reports are swirling that DC and its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, see three potential paths forward for the embattled film. According to THR, one path forward involves the 29-year-old Miller seeking professional help, and at some point sitting down with press to explain their erratic behavior. In this scenario, the film would be released in cinemas as planned.
If Miller refuses to seek help, another potential avenue for Warner Bros. reportedly involves proceeding with the film, but leaving Miller out of marketing and publicity. This approach has happened before, most recently with Ansel Elgort, who starred in West Side Story but was largely absent from the film’s promotional circuit. But unlike Elgort, Miller plays their film’s titular character and standalone protagonist—which makes erasing them from the promotional materials more difficult.
The third, and most shocking option, would be to axe the film entirely if Miller’s situation continues to devolve. Miller apparently plays multiple characters in The Flash and appears in almost every scene, so reshooting the film with a different actor is not an option, according to THR. There’s some precedent for this nuclear approach, albeit for a non-tentpole property: Last week, Warner Bros. scrapped the nearly-finished Batgirl due to its $90 million price tag, which, according to sources who spoke to Variety, was “apparently neither big enough to feel worthy of a major theatrical release nor small enough to make economic sense in an increasingly cutthroat streaming landscape.” With a price tag of $200 million, The Flash never seeing the light of day would be unprecedented for a major studio.
