Flood, flash flood watches up areawide until 1 pm Saturday; rain totals approach 6 inches in some locations - KVOE

Heavy rainfall covered much of the KVOE listening area Thursday night and Friday morning — and Mother Nature might not be done.

A flash flood watch continues for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties until 1 pm Saturday. A separate flood watch has been extended Chase and Greenwood counties until 7 pm Saturday.

Rainfall totals varied widely, with some area residents getting close to six inches of rainfall since Thursday night, and TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says there could be a similar setup by late evening Friday.

For the most part, area rivers are well in their banks. The Marais des Cygnes outside Reading is rising rapidly and could approach flood stage, but at this time is likely to stay out of flood unless heavy rainfall returns through midday Saturday.

5-9 am Friday: Flood, flash flood watches up areawide until 1 pm Saturday

Heavy rainfall overnight and the prospect of more starting Friday night has prompted the National Weather Service to issue several flood alerts for the KVOE listening area.

*A flash flood watch involves Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties until 1 pm Saturday.
*A flood watch includes Chase and Greenwood counties until 1 pm Saturday.

Urban and small stream flood advisories for north Lyon and parts of Osage and Wabaunsee counties have expired.

Up to three inches of rain has fallen across the area, and “several more inches” are possible starting Friday night and continuing through Saturday morning. Current rain totals:

*Lake Kahola: 3 inches
*Neosho Rapids: 0.95 inches
*Olpe: 1.6 inches
*Osage City: 2.31 inches
*Reading: 4.25 inches
*Reading Lake: 4.4 inches
*Saffordville: 3 inches
*Strong City: 2.13 inches
*Thorndale: 2.65 inches
*Road 270 and P: 4.75 inches

Strong thunderstorms brought heavy rain and isolated hail to areas north of Emporia on Thursday night.

Storms developed west of Emporia and moved gradually to the east across the area, dropping quarter-sized hail about two miles north of Americus.
