New Jersey’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Wednesday settled with the Trump National Golf Club Colts Neck over a fatal drunken driving crash in 2015.
As part of the agreement, the club in Monmouth County will pay the state $400,000 and restrict alcohol sales to designated areas, including the main clubhouse and halfway house.
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal authored the consent order, in which the former president’s golf club entered a plea of “non vult” charges, waiving the club's right to any appeals.
The settlement was released as former President Donald Trump announced at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster that he had filed class action lawsuits against Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
The agreement: Under the settlement, Trump National Golf Club Colts Neck offered to pay the state ABC four annual installments of $100,000 every Oct. 15 until 2024.
The club will also be restricted to serving alcohol at the clubhouse and the halfway house — not through cart service. State officials in 2019 moved to revoke the club’s liquor license altogether.
The charges: On Aug. 30, 2015, a Bergen County man, Andrew Halder, crashed his car several miles from the golf club. Halder’s father, who was a passenger in the car, died at the hospital after the accident. Halder was charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated.
According to the charges brought by Grewal, the club on that August day committed two infractions: serving liquor other than beer from carts out on the course — in violation of the club’s license — and by serving liquor to Halder, who was already “actually or apparently” intoxicated.
