The Flash Hates Superman's Classic Costume | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers for Injustice: Gods Among Us — Year Four Annual #1

In DC’s dark alternate universe of Injustice, Barry Allen, AKA the Flash, hates Superman's classic costume and the video game’s comic book spinoff made a point of making fun of the Man of Steel’s iconic look.

In the reimagined DC Universe depicted by Injustice, some things never change. Following Superman’s turn to the dark side, the other members of the Justice League have their own unique ways of dealing with recent traumatic events. Initially released around the time of Superman’s various updated costumes, the Flash has some thoughts to share about his old friend in Injustice: Gods Among Us — Year Four Annual #1, written by Tom Taylor with art by Bruno Redondo, Sergio Sandoval, and Jordi Tarragona.

As Plastic Man and the Flash walk down a residential street while in costume, they poke fun at Superman’s traditional uniform. Barry remarks, “You preferred when he wore the underwear?” to which Plastic Man responds, “I preferred when he wore a smile.” With the weight of Injustice’s premise, such a candid and light conversation between the two superheroes known for their sense of humor in the DC Universe’s status quo is a sentimental nod to the way things used to be in their world. Not only do the Leaguers make fun of his iconic red underwear, they also acknowledge the absurdity of a Superman who doesn’t smile. The self-awareness is a refreshing diversion from the serious circumstances they’ve found themselves in. Ironically, Plastic Man’s costume remains untouched from his mainstream continuity counterpart.

Although the Flash and Plastic Man’s exchange is only comprised of a few throwaway lines, their conversation implies that their version of the DC Universe looked a lot like the one that fans know. Before Injustice's Superman took on an authoritarian role following the murder of Lois Lane by the Joker, their corner of the multiverse resembled the familiar canon, with the Justice League’s most recognizable costume designs. Amidst the tragic fall of Superman, the Flash and Plastic Man’s personalities seem unchanged as they make fun of the League’s most powerful member.

Back when Superman first lost his red trunks in his New 52 redesign coinciding with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel film, many fans didn’t mind the change. Despite critiques of the stories, readers tended to agree the costume was a step in the right direction for DC’s most iconic superhero. Similarly, the tyrant Superman of Injustice had a design that felt like a distinct new take that hadn’t been seen before. It should come as no surprise that if anyone shared audiences’ thoughts on one of the biggest alterations in the DC Universe, it would be the Flash.
